Political course
The December 16th 1995, Gerard Deprez leaves the presidency of French-speaking PSC, by announcing that it must be replaced by a new president… and why not a president, referring to Joelle Milquet clearly. The news is badly accommodated within the party. One does not accept Milquet yet, categorized like " too much similar to Deprez". She will have to await the briefs reigns of Charles-Ferdinand Nothomb (1996-1998) and of Philippe Maystadt (1998-1999) to succeed indirectly her mentor, party to join the federation PRL meanwhile - FDF, future MR..
Joelle Milquet becomes president of the PSC in 1999 under difficult conditions: the PSC is found in the opposition whereas it was with the capacity since about fifty years! In 2002, it gives up the " C" of Christian and the old PSC into cdH, the Humanistic Democratic Center transforms. It must then face the creation of a dissenting party (French-speaking Democratic Christians). In spite of very weak scores with the federal elections of 2003, she is re-elected by the militants president of the cdH to autumn 2003 vis-a-vis the Dining deputy-burgomaster of Richard Fournaux which joined later a few months the MR. with other elected officials of less importance. Following the regional elections of 2004, the cdH enters the political majority of the Governments of the Région of Brussels-Capital, the Walloon region and the French Communauté of Belgium. Wanting to give a renovated image of its party and to clearly show the rupture with the old PSC, Joelle Milquet chooses five young ministers not having never occupied of ministerial position: Benoit Lutgen, Catherine Senior-Fonck, Marie-Dominique Simonet, Benoit Cerexhe and André Antoine.
In October 2006, following the communal elections, the socialist burgomaster Freddy Thielemans, and the president of the cdH, Joelle Milquet, both chief candidates to the Town of Brussels, officially announced the agreement of their respective formations to direct the city. Joelle Milquet becomes échevine of Brussels.
At the time of the federal elections of June 10th, 2007, Joelle Milquet occupies the first place of the list of the CDH for the Room in the district of Brussels-Hall-Vilvorde. During the electoral campaign, it shows its preference for an alliance with the Socialists. It obtains 33.043 votes and thus is re-elected appointed federal. From July 2007, it takes part in the negotiations carried out by the trainer Yves Leterme between the democratic Christians and the liberals to form the federal government.
