Arthur Cayley (August 16th 1821 - January 26th 1895) was a British Mathématicien . He belongs to the founders of the modern British school of pure mathematics.

He worked as lawyer during 14 years, while publishing many articles. He then became professor with Cambridge. He is the first to introduce the multiplication of the matrices. One owes him the Théorème of Cayley-Hamilton which says that any square matrix is solution of its characteristic polynomial. It gave the first, in 1854 a definition which approaches the modern concept of group.

Arthur Cayley became member of the Royal Society the June 3rd 1852. It received the Royal Medal in 1859 and the Médaille Copley in 1882.

In Combinative, its name is attached to the formula $n^ {N2}$ which enumerates the decorated trees with N tops.

One calls sometimes octaves of Cayley or numbers of Cayley the Octonion S.
