Joel-François Durand

Joel-François Durand , born the September 17th 1954, is a French type-setter born with Orleans.

Biography

After having followed Mathematical studies of , musical education and Piano in Paris, he studies the composition with Brian Ferneyhough in Musikhochschule de Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany (1981-84). Between 1979 and 1984, it follows masterclass with György Ligeti, Luciano Berio and Luigi Nono. In 1982, it receives a purse of the DAAD (Center of Academic Exchanges German) to continue its studies. The same year, it is offered a purse by the Institute of Darmstadt Internationalen Ferienkurse, following the creation of its Trio with Cords by the members of the Quartet Arditti (Darmstadt, 1982). In 1983, its work for piano alone " … of torn asylums… " is preceded with the Third International Contest of Composition K.H. Stockhausen de Brescia (Italy). It leaves Europe in 1984 to continue a doctorate in composition at the University of New York, Stony Brook (the USA), where it studies the composition with Bülent Arel and the electronic music with Daria Semegen. For this period, Durand receives purses of the Fulbright Foundation (1984) and Ministry for the Culture (1985). He receives the " Kranichsteiner Musikpreis" from Darmstadt Internationalen Ferienkurse in 1990.

Durand teaches at the Music school of the University of Washington with Seattle, since 1991, where he is Professor de Composition. Since 2002, Durand is also Assistant editor of the Music school. Durand taught the composition and gave masterclass and many conferences on his music in Europe and in the United States, including in the Center of the Voice with Royaumont (1993), in Civica Scuola di Musica of Milan (1995), in Royal Academy for Music in London (1997), in International Ferienkurse für Neue Musik, Darmstadt (1984, 1990,1992,1994), to the VIII. Internationaler Meisterkurs für Komposition of Brandenburgischen Colloquiums für Neue Musik, Rheinsberg (1998), in Washington State University, Pullman, WA (2004) and in Stanford University (2006). With the autumn 1994 it was Visiting Assisting Professor de Composition at the University of California with San Diego. Durand is also director of Contemporary Group of the Music school at the University of Washington.

The music of Joel-François Durand was ordered and carried out by many whole in Europe, in the United States, like in Brazil, in Japan and in Korea, including by the Unit Intercontemporain, London Sinfonietta, Ensemble Reverse shots, Quatuor Diotima, Quatuor Arditti, ASKO, Nieuw Ensemble, Ensemble Köln, Ensemble Seeks, musikFabrik, New York Philomusica, Counter) Induction, EarPlay, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Philarmonique from Radio France, Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin.

It published an analysis of the Sonata for piano of Jean Barraqué (Meanwhile, 1987), and a test on the music of Ruth Crawford Seeger (" New voices 92" , Royaumont).

A book on its music, " Joel-François Durand In the Mirror Land" , published by Jonathan W. Bernard, left in autumn 2005 in University off Washington Close, in collaboration with Perspectives off New Music.
