Joe Zawinul

Josef Zawinul , known as Joe Zawinul (born with Vienna the July 7th 1932, deceased the September 11th 2007 in this same town of a cancer of the skin) is a Pianiste and Claviériste of Jazz of Austrian nationality and which have origins Hungarian are, Czech S and, like it specifies it itself, Tzigane S. It played with the trumpet player Miles Davis and was the founder of the group of Jazz-rock'n'roll Weather Report.

Its beginnings

Born in Austria, Joe Zawinul began the music with the Gypsy music and the Austrian traditional music. Raised by his large father, it also takes for instrument of predilection the Piano, but practical the low Trompette. It starts to play in various local groups, the Fifties, as in 1952 with the player of sax-tenor Hans Koller, then later everywhere in Europe with musicians such as the Clarinettiste Fatty George and the pianist Friedrich Gulda.

America

Obsessed by the American Dream, it is presented in 1959 to the contest organized by the newspaper Down Beat and off obtains a grant to the Berklee College Music. But there remain only a few days there, before joining the group of the Canadian Trompettiste Maynard Ferguson.

Then he plays with various musicians before integrating in 1962 the group of the saxophonist viola Julian Cannonball Adderley, who had had a name in the whole of Miles Davis in 1961. Zawinul quickly becomes an outstanding musical personality and an appreciated type-setter. It is thus, as of this time, the author of topics which will remain famous like The Country Preacher , Walk Tall and Mercy, Mercy, Mercy . The group had a certain success, connecting the world tours and Joe Zawinul remained there until 1970.

Miles Davis

At the end of the years 1960, Miles Davis starts to change style under the influence of the music Rock, and in particular that of Jimi Hendrix. The jazz then played by Davis is moulted in more electric jazz, field where Zawinul excels. It thus records some albums with this trumpet player, whose In has Silent Way and Bitches Brew .

With the beginning of the year 1970, Zawinul founds the group of Jazz-rock'n'roll Weather Report with Wayne Shorter (sax-tenor and sax-soprano) and Miroslav Vitous (Basse). The group had the role to try out sound new prospects, being interested in the new fields, while being surrounded of other musicians like the Bassiste Jaco Pastorius. In spite of their style of fusion Jazz-rock'n'roll, the group was an immense success as notoriety testifies some to compositions such as Birdland . This group was regularly in the hit-parades, obtaining rewards like the Grammy. He was regarded besides as " Number 1" fifteen times of continuation by Down Beat, which also qualified Joe Zawinul of " better pianiste" twenty-two times of continuation, a record.

Its last group

In 1986, Zawinul founds a new group which will alas be dedicated to the failure, Weather Update, which includes/understands the beater Peter Erskine, and the bass player Victor Bailey, all two resulting from Weather Report.

It turned with the Zawinul Syndicate in which officiated Richard Bona, Amit Chaterjee, Fared Haquee, Gerald Weasley, Bill Summers, Leata Galloway, Carl Anderson, Bobby Thomas Jr, Mike Baker, Ronnie Burrage, Randy Bernsen, Lynn Fiddmont, Abraham Laboriel Sr, Manolo Badrena, Arto Tuncboyacyan, Abdou Mboup, Scott Henderson, Maria Joao, Etienne Me bappé, Linley Marthe, Cornell Rochester, Paco Sery, Stephan Galland, Karim Ziad, Nathaniel Townsley, Sabine Kabongo, Trilok Gurtu, Victor Bailey, Lively Correa, Gary Poulson, Sheik Tidiane Seick, Rodney Holmes, Matthew Garrison and others…

Since 2004, Joe Zawinul was owner of a club of jazz, the " Birdland" with Vienna in which it recorded an double album live with the WDR Big Band like Victor Bailey, Nathaniel Townsley and Alex Acuna.

September 6th, 2007, the Zawinul Syndicate was to take part in the Parisian jazz festival " Jazz in the Villette " , with like special guest Wayne Shorter in person. Unfortunately, he will be hospitalized on August 7th, 2007 in Vienna, to treat the rare shape of cancer of the skin. One had been able to notice the physical decline of Joe during the spring round of 2007 (slimming, giddinesses…). He dies of the continuations of his disease on September 11th, 2007, with the Wilhelmina private clinic of Vienna.

Its work

As important as can be the place of Joe Zawinul as pianist of jazz, its real notoriety lies in the role of pioneer of the keyboards electroacoustic and electronic with a whole battery of peripheral equipments to modify the sonority and the height of the sound. Having been subject to the influence of George Shearing and Nat King Cole in her young age, Zawinul developed an increasingly personal style.
