Joseph Henderson , more commonly called Joe Henderson (born the April 24th 1937 and deceased the June 30th 2001) was a saxophonist tenor and Compositeur of Jazz.
Biography
Joe Henderson was born with Lima in the Ohio, of a poor family of 15 children. He discovers the jazz thanks to the recordings of the Jazz At the Philharmonic of the one of his brothers. Encouraged by his parents and his brother, it starts to practice the battery, then the saxophone tenor at 13 years by studying the repertory Lester Young. Very quickly, it composes for the orchestra of its college and occurs in local clubs.Later, Henderson studies the music with the college of State of the Kentucky ( Kentucky State College ) then at the university Wayne of Detroit ( Wayne University ) at the 18 years age. It becomes active on the scene jazz of this city, and takes part in Jam session S in company of the New Yorkean stars of passage. These opportunities encourage it to learn the Flûte and the low , and especially to develop its competences for the saxophone and the composition. These classmates, among whom one can quote Yusef Lateef, Barry Harris, or Donald Byrd, bring certainly other sources to him of inspiration.
After its military service (of 1960 to 1962), it settles with New York where it is taken in hand by the trumpet player Kenny Dorham. Of 1963 with 1968, it records in sideman on about thirty albums of the mythical label Blue Note. Although these first recordings are impressed of a strong influence Hard bop, its play embraces not only the Be-bop, R&B or the Latin , but also the avant-garde. Its participations include the quintet of Horace Silver until in 1964 - one owes him a solo on Song for My Father , the famous tube of the pianist -, the album Prisoner of Herbie Hancock or the avant-gardist Black Fire of Andrew Hill.
