Joe Grant (May 17th 1908 - May 6th 2005) was a scenario writer, draftsman and American writer but also caricaturist. He was named Disney Legend in 1992.
He was the creator of the character of the queen-witch of Blanche Snow and the seven dwarves (1937) and Co-scenario writer of Dumbo (1941).
Biography
Joe Grant was born the May 17th 1908 with New York. It began its career with the Disney studios like organizer in 1932 on the short film from Mickey Mouse, Parade off the Award Nominees but was indicated on credits only in 1933 with Mickey' S Gala First .It is named by Walt Disney to design the character of the Queen in Blanche Snow and the 7 dwarves (1937). It ensures then the development of the scenario for Fantasia and Pinocchio and takes part in the writing of the scenario of Dumbo (1941).
During the Second world war he works on the scenario of the short film Der Fuehrer' S Face , rewarded with the Oscars.
He leaves the studios in 1949 to create a company of ceramics and calling card. He however is associated film of 1955 the Beautiful one and to the Tramp . The Lady bitch is inspired by the American cocker spaniel, also called Lady, pertaining to the organizer Joe Grant. It would be after having seen this bitch and its fourure that Walt Disney would have decided to make a film with this race of dog.
It returns to the studios in 1989 at the age 81 years and works on films of the second golden age of animation mainly on the scenarios: the Beautiful one and the Animal (1991), the King Lion (1994), Pocahontas (1995), the Uneven one of Notre-Dame (1996), Mulan (1998) and Fantasia 2000 . It continues to work with the studios 4 days per week until its last day, 9 days before its 97e birthday. It is deceased the May 6th 2005 of an heart attack on its board of drawing in the studios. It was buried in the cemetery Forest Lawn Memorial Park of Glendale
Its last film was Lorenzo left in 2004 for which he had written the scenario and had helped with the storyboards. This work was rewarded into 2005 with the Oscars. An important collection of its caricatures was acquired by the Smithsonian Museum.
