Jodel
The Jodel are private planes French single-engined aircrafts. The name Jodel comes from two men: Edouard Jolly, pilot, manufacturer amateur, farmer of his state, OJ , and his/her son-in-law, Jean Délémontez, mechanic plane, self-educated engineer, LED .
Jean Délémontez starts to design seriously planes in 1941 ( D1 , etc) when it is with the industrial Workshop of aeronautics (AIA) with Blagnac. He does that like pastime, in addition to his work. In 1942, Jean will settle at Edouard Jolly, for officially maintaining agricultural machinery. The two men know each other of before the war, Edouard had built a Pou of the sky of Henri Mignet ( HM-14 ), Jean had come to see it with Beaune, they had then sympathized. During this period, Jean works little on the tractors, but much on his projects.
The Jodel company
In 1946, they create both the company of the planes Jodel . The goal is the study, the construction and the repair of air material. They immediately will have work with the repair of the sailplanes of the Service of light and sporting aviation (SALS, ancestor of current SFACT).
A baby at the “Jodel”
In 1947, in addition to their normal work, Jean conceives its ninth project. They launch out in the construction of their first plane which will be thus the D9 , famous “the Jodel baby”. It is a single-engined aircraft out of wooden and fabric, single-seater with open cockpit with already the wings characteristic of all Jodel, a rectangular central part and the trapezoidal end of the wings which goes up with a dihedral fort . The engine will be Poinsard of 25 cv recovered on the Pou of the sky of Edouard. It will accomplish its first flights, in January 1948.
Whereas they built it only for their pleasure, thinking of carrying out one specimen of it, this small plane will be an extremely unexpected success for these originators. The plane is robust, of manufacture easy and ensuring of good performances. Requests for manufacturers amateurs were not long in arriving. The French government was also interested in it.
This small plane out of the commun run became a reference. It will be declined in an impressive series of two-seater, four-seater, etc builds by various companies and even by amateurs directly on plan. The number of derived planes built would be of approximately 7 000.
The D11
In 1950 arrives “the first true” production of the company will be a two-seater derived from the D9 , the D11 to answer a request of the government which seeks a plane of training for the Aéro-club S. the D11 , like the D9 , also will be a success, more particularly its various versions, the D112 with an engine Continental C65 of 65 cv, the D117 of 90 cv product by the aeronautical Société Norman (SAN) with Bernay, the D119 of 90 cv built by amateurs and the D120 also of 90 cv, produced him by the Planes Wassmer with Issoire. Many of these planes fly still today (2004).
As it is seen, the Jodel company does not build itself the planes. It sells licenses of production at other companies or directly the bundles of plans with manufacturers amateurs.
And the D10 ?
In 1957, Jean Delemontez works with Pierre Robin and its company Center Is aeronautical (ECA) which will be called later Avions Robin (and today APEX Aviation), on a plane based on the D10 , tri-four-seater, which will be in fact never built such as it is. That will give the series of the DR100 , precursors of the DR200 , DR300 and finally DR400 which is always produced at present (2004).
In this first series, one will have:
- DR100 with the Continental engine C90 of 90 cv
- the DR1050 with the engine Rolls-Royce or Continental O-200 of 100 cv both, which will be called “Sicily” for those built by the ECA, and “Ambassador” for those of ENV. DR1050M of the SAN will be called him “Excellence”
- DR1051 with the engine Potez 4E20 of 105 cv
The name “Sicily” comes from the race of 1964 in Sicily that the plane manually-controlled by Pierre Robin brilliantly gained with a mean velocity of 260 km/h (with an engine of 105 cv!).
After it is the D140 !
The D12 was a light modification of the D11 which will give the D120 about which one already spoke. The D13 will not be born. In 1958, it is thus the D14 which will be born and which will give to the D140 “Musketeer”. Been driven by an engine of 180 cv, it is one 4/5 places, which can take along a payload (passengers, luggage and gasoline) equal to its empty weight, which is very rare on the single-engined aircrafts. This powerful plane will be quickly adopted by the pilots of mountain where it makes wonder still today.
D150 “Mascaret”
In 1962, the D11 gets old, Jean thus designs a two-seater, with an engine Continental O-200A of 100 cv. It recovers the wing of the DR100. Its cruising speed is of 200 km/h and it can carry in addition to 2 people and full, 60 kg of luggage. The D150 is especially with the the United Kingdom.
D160
The D160 was an ambitious project: one 6 places, driving Lycoming of 235 cv, possibly with returning train. But the owner of the SAN which was to ensure the production being deceased, the plane will never be produced.
D18 , D19 , etc
In parallel of the industrially built apparatuses, Jean only designs planes for construction amateur. He sells only the plans, the manufacturer getting materials on his side or by buying “kits” in particular near the Burgundian aeronautical Company (SAB) held by his ex-son-in-law.
The D18 with traditional train and D19 with three-wheeled train are extrapolations of the D9 , motorized by an engine of car Volkswagen put at the standards aviation.
Edouard deceased in 1982, Jean could profit from a right retirement. But not, after a pause, it still conceives in 1997 the D20 , a “DR400” two-seater, motorized by a JPX of 85 cv or a ROTAX of 80 or 100 cv. A version ULM will follow in 2000.
Pushed by Jacques Vion, it still will take again the drawing board, to adapt one of its planes to the diesel motorization. It will be the Delvion , conceived starting from a four-seater DR-300 .
On the whole, between Jodel and Robin, it is more than 7.000 planes which were built in addition to 50 years.
, The company of the Jodel planes markets the plans of Jodel D185 and D195 which are version ULM of the planes Jodel D18 and D19. The most important modification to be able to be classified ULM related to the installation of large camber flaps (24 cm) which make it possible to obtain a mini speed lower than 65 km/h. The fuselage was extended to the level of the file of the seat if not the remainder of the apparatus is identical to D18 or D19.
