Jock Sturges

Jock Sturges , born in 1947 with New York, is a American Photographe . He known for his naked is especially taken in environments naturist S. He currently lives with San Francisco.

Work

Its work is primarily composed of family photos, of adults, girls and boys, children, generally naked. It is the latter point which attracted the controversy (see low). Its places of predilection are the naturist places, inter alia those of the west of France (generally with Montalivet), but also in Italy or California. It is itself naturist.

Its style falls under a long tradition of American photographers using the room large-format. It more particularly evokes the work of Sally Mann: black & white with the wide ranges of gray (the shades and the high lights are always detailed), high degree of accuracy of the details (use of film 20x25cm), choice of " poses" supporting a certain intensity of the subject, images born of a collaboration based on confidence enters the artist and his subjects.

Nature, simplicity, being in becoming and force glance are the few fields or he excels particularly. The fixed moments are impressed of grace and sensuality. One perceives the respect of the photographer for his so fragile models of appearance, but with the major glance. Sturges always considers its models with respect: if it shares a certain intimacy, it there forever of voyeurism.

Indeed, he likes to find one year on the other, or several years the models which he photographed. Thus a woman, taken in photograph whereas it was in enclosure, then now, with the child whom it carried. One of the models of Jock Sturges was even photographed for one 25 years period!

It is thus this temporality which makes the force of Sturges: to photograph the same person at different periods of their life, or to photograph people of different ages at the same time.

Discusses

Its photographs of naked children, however stripped of very implied sexual, are often badly included/understood. Jock Sturges has thus to face American justice: In 1990, it is suspecté by FBI of enfreindre the American law on the childish Pornographie. Its workshop is then searched and all its material as its photographs are seized. A made up movement of defense art lovers and naturists was then created and defended it publicly. One year later, any continuation against him was abandoned.

Jock Sturges since recovered all its material, but the many negative ones were damaged and this business made him lose 100.000 $ in court fees.
