Job Cohen
Marinus Job Cohen (October 18th 194 7 with Haarlem) is a Politician Dutch member of the Workers party of the Netherlands (PvdA).
Wire of a Jewish-liberal family, he studies the right to the Université of Groningue. Later he works with the Université of Leyde and the Université of Maastricht. He becomes professor with the university of Maastricht in 1983 and vice-chancellor of this university in 1991.
In 1983, Cohen becomes Secretary of State to Teaching in the cabinet Lubbers. One year later, it turns over to its scientific work. At the same time, he is member of the First Room, the Upper House of the General states ( of Staten-Generaal ), the Dutch Parliament.
In 1998, he resigns of the First Room to become Secretary of State to Justice in the cabinet Kok. As Secretary of State de Justice it with the responsibility for a new law on immigration.
He resigns as Secretary of State at the time when he is named Bourgmestre Amsterdam by royal decree on January 17th, 2001. Very little time after its taking up the duties as burgomaster, it links an homosexual couple by the bonds of the marriage. It is the first Homosexual marriage in the world. A few months earlier, Job Cohen itself as a Secretary of State had defended at the Parliament the private bill on the legalization of the homosexual marriage.
During the legislative elections of 2003, one often quotes Cohen like new Prime Minister social democrat potential. But the Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende of the party Christian-Democrat remains in function and Cohen remains burgomaster of Amsterdam.
In 2005, Cohen was proclaimed by Time like European Hero (“European hero”) for its behavior after the assassination of Theo van Gogh by a Moslem extremist in November 2004 in a populated street. On this occasion, supporting people in their protest, it calls at the same time with the unit and the tolerance. Since this time, the burgomaster made of sound better “keep cohesion” (: of boel bij elkaar houden ) so that the town of Amsterdam is faithful to its reputation of open and tolerant city.
In 2006, Cohen is one of the candidates for the World Mayor Award 2006 . From the fifty burgomasters of five continents in total, Cohen obtains the second place after the mayor John So of Melbourne (World Mayor).
Job Cohen has been member of the workers party for his twenty years. He is married and father of a son and a girl.
