Joaquín Galarza
Joaquín Galarza , born the October 2nd 1928 with San Luis Potosí (Mexico), deceased the July 31st 2004 with Paris, was a famous Anthropologue, honorary Research director with CNRS, specialist in the Codex mésoaméricains.
Course
Engineer Chemist and Librarian of formation, Joaquín Galarza undertook all its higher learning with Mexico City. In 1954, he becomes librarian with the National library of Paris which gathers the second most important collection of Mexican manuscripts. Thereafter, it obtains its thesis of State entitled: Analysis of Mexican pictographic manuscripts, in particular codex of Zempoala with the School of the high studies in social sciences in 1977, under the direction of Jacques Soustelle.Known and recognized thanks to its method of deciphering of the manuscripts, it accomplished many voyages to bring its knowledge and its knowledge abroad. He studied in particular the collection Henri de Saussure with Geneva which gathers the copies of the pictographic manuscripts carried out by the naturalist. At the university of Bologna, it will meet Umberto Eco which on several occasions invited it to give courses on the epigraphy mésoaméricaine.
During thirty years, Joaquín Galarza devoted all its time to seek the key which would make it possible to decipher the writing Aztèque.
Aztec writing
Joaquín Galarza is a pioneer in the interpretation of the Aztec writing. It acquired the certainty that the Codex are not simply a whole of Images, but true Texte S which is “ first hand historical sources on a multitude of aspects like the religious beliefs ”. Its method of deciphering, applied by many epigraphists mesoamericanists in the world, is done starting from the reality of the Manuscrit and not of its interpretations.
