Joan Cererols

Joan Cererols (* September 9th 1618 with Martorell - † August 27th 1680) was a type-setter Catalan.

Biography

This Catalan was musician and monk Benedictine.

Vesr 1626, it enters to the school of chorus Escolania de Montserrat. Cererols takes its first courses of music under the direction of the father Joan Mars, a famous organist. September 6th, 1636, after ten years in Escolania, Joan is allowed like beginner at the monastery of Montserrat, it is then eighteen years old. In 1648, Cererols receives the permission of Mars to visit Madrid where it will be able to meet the new generation of the musicians of the time On its return, it is confirmed like member of the monastic community. In 1658, with died of its Master Mars, Joan Cererols becomes Chef of chorus of his monastery. It preserves this position until its death in 1680.

Its work

Among its compositions, it is necessary to note its Requiem (or Missa pro defunctis) composed during the great plague which devastated Barcelona, and Missa de Batalla (or Mass of the battle) which celebrates the conquest of the kingdom of Naples.
