Marriage and descent

The April 10th 1502, Joachim Ier Nestor de Brandebourg married Elisabeth of Denmark (1485 - 1555), (girl of Jean Ier of Denmark).

Five children were born from this union:

  • Elisabeth de Brandebourg (1510 - 1558), in 1525, it married the duke Eric Ier of Brunswick-Kalenberg († 1540), widow, it married in 1546, the count Poppo XVIII of Henneberg († 1574)

  • Marguerite de Brandebourg (1511 - 1577), in 1530, it married the duke Georges Ier de Poméranie-Wolgast († 1531). Widow, it married in 1534, the prince Jean II of Anhalt-Zerbst († 1551). Again widowed, she married in 1553 Jean von Goltz († 1566)

Biography

Joachim Ier Nestor de Brandebourg is the oldest son of Jean Ier Cicéron de Brandebourg. Joachim Ier Nestor accepted a good education of its tutor Dietrich von Bülow, bishop of Lebus and chancellor of the university of Frankfurt. It succeeded his father the January 9th 1499, little time after it married Elisabeth of Denmark.

The first years of its reign were mainly devoted to the administration of its electorate, it took severe measures in order to restore the authority in its State. It improved the administration of justice, helped with développment trade and supported the cities. With the approach of the imperial election of 1519, it was requested by the partisans of François Ier de France and of Charles of Burgundy (future Charles Quint). After having negotiated, it accepted great promises on both sides. It seems to have hoped to be elected emperor. But when the election came, it turned to the party of the winners and voted for Charles V of the Holy roman Empire. Despite everything, the relations between Charles Quint and Joachim Ier Nestor de Brandebourg were often stormy.

Joachim Ier Nestor de Brandebourg was a burning defender of the Roman Catholic church. His/her brother, Albert de Brandebourg, Archevêque of Mainz were the object of attacks on behalf of Martin Luther. Joachim Ier Nestor required of Charles Quint the respect of the Édit of Worms (May 25th 1521). It was one of the enemies of the Reform. It promoted Georges von Blumenthal, chancellor of the university of Frankfurt, bishop of Lebus and private adviser. It appeared among the members brought together in Dessau in July 1525, it was member of the Ligue of the Market created in November 1553. Against her will, his wife, Elisabeth of Denmark became Protestant following the example her brother Christian II of Denmark. For its safety, it had to escape to take refuge in Saxony. It was to mortify to see other members of its family supporting Protestantism.

Joachim Ier Nestor created in 1506 the university of Frankfurt (Oder).

He died in Stendal on July 11th, 1535.

Joachim Ier Nestor belongs to the first branch of the Maison of Hohenzollern. This line provides voters, kings, emperors with the Prussia and the Germany. He is ascending current chief of the imperial House of Germany the prince Georges Frederic of Prussia.
