Introduction

JoJo, the name

The JoJo nickname is given to the various heroes of the series. This saga is made up of various parts. In each one, the hero finds himself thus named because it is the succession of the first 2 syllables of its name and first name.

  • OJ nathan OJ estar
  • OJ seph OJ estar
  • OJ tarô Kû OJ
  • OJ suke Higashikata (Jôsuke is written: “仗助”, if the first Kanji decides “OJ”, the second can be marked either “Suke” or “OJ”, from where its nickname of JoJo)
  • Gio rno Gio winnowed (sound “OJ” or “Gio” are written same manner in Katakana: ジョ)
  • OJ lyne Kû OJ
  • OJ hnny OJ estar

Singularity of work

Disconcerting work, targeting a certain public, it désarçonne the reader accustomed to the banals “shônen”, struck initially by its graphics (twisted, not very easy of access, dark and excavated), which is not appreciated of all and takes a certain time before being decoded:

  • impressive Musculature for the male characters, especially in the first parts very réminescentes of Hokuto No Ken.
  • strange
  • Cutting of the boards in diagonal, prospects, extravagant getups and installations atypical and impossible anatomically speaking.
Extravagant work, by an exacerbated and even magnifiée violence, punctuating the grotesque side: The graphic leg of Araki is single and not very usual Japanese productions. The influence “Comic S” and even “pulp” is strongly felt in the first volumes.

Impassioned, curious, different, artist out-standards (a little insane, unmethodical, with the various inspirations but so generous), impassioned Occidental culture and voyages, Araki likes with dépayser his basic assistantship.
Quand the first chapter had to appear in the pages of famous the Shōnen Jump in 1987, the average reader had to be found quite surprised by this history of an English Lord tormented by his adoptive brother. What a sacrilege for the time, but also what a diversion of the commonplaces of the “shônen”!
Après the strange prolog of the Aztec human sacrifice, one is found in full England victorienne!
Le hero, this poor Jonathan, proving to be solitary and foreign, apart from the tacit rules into force at the time (and a little always today), is found tormented by a jealous adoptive brother and go-getter.
Voici something moreover nearer to the brimades undergone by Candy, than the fantastic adventure of a young person His Gokû.
Araki, with diverting elements, exacerbated violence and a tendency to exoticism, does not forget the many references to the Western and especially musical pop culture…

Seven parts

Cutting in parts is one of the forces of the series, because it makes it possible to the reader to regularly meet new characters, to see maturing the old ones, to stick to them and to follow their adventures in a rather long amount of time, so that the whole develops suitably, but enough runs to avoid wearying it. That also allows, since developing on several generations, constantly to renew the plethora of characters, while having the joy of finding the old ones with the wire of the parts (Joseph, Jotaro and Polnareff are thus recurring characters)

The official titles were given during the publication of the series to the format “Bunko” (small size and higher pagination for edition of bookstore). The original names were allotted at the time of the prepublication in the Weekly Shōnen Jump or at the time of the later edition in volumes. The 6th part does not have an original name because it was immediately named “Stone Ocean” following its new classification. The correspondence in volume is obviously that of the traditional edition diffused in France.

Combat, the force of the series

The combat of JoJo (who, it should be said, constitutes the major part of the manga), prove closer to the resolution of a enigma than of a simple combat of “shônen”. The characters, must show of ingeniousness and intelligence, to guess what hides behind the unfavourable Stand (the bounces are legions), take their precautions. It is not question of having recourse to the old well-worn string of the hero, which is concerned with end forces thanks to the memory its Master, his boyfriend, her friends, etc In Jojo, the imprudent one is seriously punished. Suspense, to cut the breath, which punctuates each combat thus, is worthy of the best police officers.

The very strategic combat, fascinating of account the environment and the capacities of the opponents, can prove to be poignant and often confusing… The combat against Vanilla Ice will remain in the memories: despaired, haletant, at the conclusion dubious until the end and truly dramatic.

The heroes leave themselves there with their capacities, only: they cannot count on a providential help or a chance insolente. Their victory is never sure and the price to be paid proves sometimes quite heavy.

More than with fight of to be able, as in others mangas of engagements (or generally, it is with that which will have the strongest will, or best “the technical of the dead one which kills ”), the reader is entitled to a confrontation of spirit. The winner affirms himself by his intellectual domination, his direction of anticipation, his ingeniousness.

The Stands , revolution brought by the series

The Stands are the revolution and the feature of factory of the various combat of JoJo' S. It is with this idea that Araki will be able to show its imagination. Concretely, the Stands represent psyché of the person, her spirit combattif and according to the aforementioned person, the capacity will change. Araki left the idea that one never knew how functioned the capacity of Superman or another hero of Comics. With the Stands, that mitigates the problem.

Humanity of the characters created by Araki

If the sacrifice, the virile friendship are two topics impossible to circumvent of the “shônen manga”, Araki dissociates majority of its fellow-members by the sublimation of the poignant moments, impressed of humanity. Raised in the Christian religion, it indicates that the sacrifice of Christ called into question her design of the hero.
the true hero is somebody who does not point out himself, which acts in the shade and for justice. The true hero does not seek the congratulations and dies in anonymity, knowing that it precisely acted. I think that Jesus is a pure hero…

JoJo in spite of his eccentricity, his delirious and often laughing side, remains a sometimes dark and dramatic manga, in which the main characters do not hesitate to sacrifice themselves noblement, even at the price of an atrocious death.

a human spirit! ” is the last sentence which Caesar shouts before succumbing vis-a-vis its adversary, at the end of a keen fight. But its death will not be vain because its ultimate present will reach the hand of Joseph well, his friend.

Araki states to want exalter humanity through its characters and this, as well by their noblest values as by the most contemptible side of the various enemies. They have their own reasons to act thus and a very marked character. Strongest prove always very impressive or attaching, that it is noble and sizeable the Wamuu , the charismatic manipulator and Dio , the mysterious Diavolo or imposing the Yoshikage Kira showing well the interest of the author for the Serial killer S, of which it read the biographies until nausea.

These very worked characters always form a true gallery, varied, which takes again almost all the prototypes of the manga, succeeding in making the enemies so realistic that the reader enjoys to hate them or to like them, because representing the most obscure face in each man or his will for power. Disconcerting the Kira proves even almost touching by its obstinacy with living normally.

As for small strike that the heroes cross, closer to daily spite than one knows, are beings without scale, often méprisables and petty, being caught some with weakest, and seeking to break the others by simple jealousy.

The variety of the characters is also obtained because they are coming from the whole world: English, Japanese, Egyptian, Italian, French. One would believe oneself in an advertizing Benetton emphasizing all the diversity of the mankind.

As for the heroes, they have a whole a well defined character:

  • Jonathan , noble and courageous.
  • Joseph , frimor and a little cheater.
  • Jôtarô which, under its coldness, hides a gold heart.

Evolving/moving, each one follows its way to mature, become stronger and better, like:

  • Polnareff , recluse and sure of him, which thanks to the sacrifice of his/her friends finds confidence in others.
  • Kakyôin which, overcoming its fear, will find the force to fight for the others thanks to the heat of the friendship of those which really included/understood it.
  • Koîchi which, being affirmed, will succeed in protecting those that it likes.
  • Rohan which will redécouvrira its love for his/her sister.
  • Jolyne which will find a father that it had ever known.

Message of work

I draw JoJo on the topic of “the anthem to the life”, “the size of the human being”. I hold so that my hero also comes to end from the dangers without resorting to machines or technology, but by means of its own body. It is because I am of the opinion that sciences inevitably always do not make the happiness of the man.

The matter of the author, Araki, proves to be humanistic, while wanting to show the extraordinary capacity of the man to be reinvented, to evolve/move and create. One sees his love of mankind in all his differences and diversity of the characters which it presents but as in its interest for the strangest creators and characters as humanity knew.

What makes us the human ones? Does the destiny exist? Let us can fight it to us? Here questions raised by work been used by a translation as quality and impassioned.

By their will inébranlable to be opposed to unnamable, to fight until the end of their conviction, the heroes of JoJo show that nothing is never final, that there will be always hope. There is a gleam in the night, and courage and perseverance can make it possible to come to end from the adversity. Nothing is insurmountable as long as formidable human vitality palpitates in their veins, to fight to protect those which they like, to fight for their dreams, to transcend themselves and become better. This state of espritn' is not seuleument present in the heroes, but also at their adversaries.

JoJo was the jewel of the Shōnen Jump and yet one of his the least recognized titles, a mixing of the world pop culture, an invitation with the voyage and discovered other cultures. He transcends the defects and makes shine qualities of this type of account. He diverts the codes and renews himself of them perpetually. Impresses optimism and dream, JoJo is the most brilliant work of the kind “shônen manga”.

The heritage resulting from the childhood of this share of innocence to be transmitted to the future generations can appear naive and simplistic: never not to give up, keep the hope and to believe in oneself, its dreams, and the human one.

Joseph: “ I carried out something, young people of this city… Each one of them had a spirit and a heart of gold! I saw your Jôtarô eyes in Egypt… Reflecting the light of justice, a Heart of Gold. I saw it in Jôsuke and the boys. As long as they will have this spirit, it will not have there problems. people who did not know Kira, they will be also dazzled by this light… And will bequeath it to the future generations.

JoJo and his influence in the production of the mangas

  • famous CLAMP, having discovered work via the RPG Super Nintendo, proves to be very large fans. Their source of inspiration appears particularly obvious in a work like X, the symbolic system of the tarot (pointing out curiously a “Stand”) having been taken again by all the team or according to the will of Nekoi.
They carried out besides a Fanzine with in cover valiant “the Stardust Crusaders” and even went as far as drowning mail the magazine of Japanese mangas “Puff” to save Jôtarô at the time of the usual survey of popularity of the monthly characters.
  • Shô-U Tajima (MPD Psycho) also states to be to him a large amateur of the series. (It specifies besides in an interior of cover which it failed to stop drawing by reading " JoJo" " so much work is perfect and that it could never better make…)

  • “Scryed”, one animates rather recent, directly took again the system of the “Stands” with the “Alter”.

  • Among the young generation of the authors of the Jump, one feels a clear influence.

The influence of the Stands on Shaman King is more than obvious.
  • Togashi, author of Yû yû hakusho and Hunter × Hunter does not hesitate to take again the wave with its “nen” or to take as a starting point Dio by creating Hisoka.

As for the part Sensui de Yû Yû it is inspired without shame of the 3rd part of JoJo. Anamuna and Kaitô Yû curiously point out the brothers D' Arby. Itsuki has a capacity of shade like Alessi. Doctor Kamiya has a capacity at zone limited like the Stands. Mitarai curiously has a capacity pointing out that of Duul, etc

And the course of its two series or the way in which the heroes solve tests in the form of enigmas is in the pure tradition of its elder.

  • the creator of Yu-Gi-Oh! is a recognized fan of “JoJo”, moreover one sees it in the construction of the first volumes or the look of the hero pointing out that of Jôtarô .

  • Watsuki, known for Kenshin, does not hesitate to take again the strange installations of the series in its Busō renkin, whose hero is a large fan of certain Rohan Kishibe.

  • Some passages of works of Kishimoto and Oda have a certain " spirit; JoJoesque" as the examination of Naruto or capacity of Crocodile which points out “The Fool”.

  • the system of generations will find in various RPGs like “Phantasy Star III” or “Dragon Quest V”.

  • the drawing of the characters will inspire many plays of baston. One will note for example the disconcerting resemblance between:

* Polnareff and Benimaru of “King off Fighters”.
* LISA LISA with Rose of “Street Fighter Zero”.
  • In “World Heroes 2”, one finds a general Nazi robotized like Rudolph von Stroheim and the last boss, in addition to adopting the same look as Baoh , fore-mentioned Dio .

  • It is hardly astonishing that Falcoon, Character designer of “KOF 2003” is a large fan of JoJo.
  • RPG “Blue Dragon”, created jointly by Sakaguchi and Toriyama, sees the young heroes besides fighting by using shades taking the shape of animals and representing their interior force.

  • the series of plays “Persona” (Spin-off of Megami Tensei), developed by Atlus which had the excellent initiative to take up the idea of the “Stands” in a roleplay.

JoJo, work with the hundred ideas per volume, will have definitively left his print and makes indeed school.
