João Rodrigues Cabrilho

João Rodrigues Cabrilho (1499 - 1543) was a Explorateur Portuguese known for its exploration of the west coast of the North America, whereas it sailed for the Spain. He was the first European explorer to sail close to the coast of the current California to the the United States. He also helped with the foundation of the town of Oaxaca to the Mexico.

Origins

One knows very few things in connection with his youths: even its nationality is dubious, the majority of the biographies describing it like Portuguese. But according to the biography written in 1986 by the historian Harry Kelsey, it would have been born in Spain, probably with Seville (or Cuellar). Its birth date and its parents are also unknown but the events of its life let think of Kelsey which he had been born poor relations “  between 1498 and 1500  ” and that he worked in an important merchant of Seville to provide for his needs.

Voyages

Rodrigues Cabrilho voyaga until Havana like boy of crew and joined the forces of Hernán the Cortes in Mexico. Later, using of its talents of contractor, it put in slavery the natives of its possessions to work in the gold mines of the Guatemala. They did of him one of richest the Conquistador S of Mexico.

Following the voyage of Francisco de Ulloa in 1539, which had discovered the Golfe of California, the Vice-roi of Nouvelle Spain, Don Antonio de Mendoza, required of Cabrilho to lead a forwarding along the Peaceful Coast to the search for trade appropriatenesses, to perhaps find a way towards the China.

The June 27th 1542 the explorer started from Navidad (now Acapulco) and stopped the September 28th same year in what is today the Baie of San Diego and that it called “  San Miguel  ”. According to the coast, it exceeded the channel of Santa Barbara and went to the Russian river of California before the autumnal storms does not force it to turn over behind, until the island Santa Catalina to spend the winter and to carry out repairs of the ships.

Cabrilho fell sick and died of the Gangrène the January 3rd 1543. Its body was flaring.
