João Gilberto
João Gilberto , of its true name João Gilberto Prado Pereira de Oliveira, is a musician Brésil IEN, considered as the principal creator of the Bossa nova. He was born the June 10th 1931 in Juazeiro in the state from Bahia. He gains a sharp success with the Brésil with the song Chega of saudade in 1958. It is truly in 1962 that its success becomes international with its interpetation of Garota de Ipanema , accompanied by Stan Getz, today become an international song sung in several languages by many prestigious artists such as Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole or Ella Fitzgerald. Nowadays, João Gilberto continues to give concerts throughout the world.
Biography
João Gilberto is born the June 10th 1931 in the state from Bahia. At the 14 years age, João Gilberto comes into contact for the first time with the music when his/her grandfather offers his first Guitare to him. At 18 years, it leaves its native village to go in the big city of Salvador de Bahia. Self-educated guitarist, it goes up finally to Rio de Janeiro in 1950 and obtains there some successes within a formation of the time, Garotos da Lua , of which it is congédié one year later after three recordings in all. Several years of wandering and marginality follow, during which it does not have of cease to be a mode of expression with the Guitare.Its efforts are rewarded starting from 1957, in particular by the meeting of the type-setter Tom Jobim with whom it records the first and greatest successes of the Bossa nova , initially as guitarist on a disc of Elizeth Cardoso, Canção C Amor Demais , Co-compound by Jobim and the poet Vinícius de Moraes. It leaves in 1958 its clean 78T and 33T Chega de Saudade , which launches to Brazil at the same time the career of João Gilberto and all the musical movement worked nova . This first album of João Gilberto obtains an enormous success in Brazil. He is in general regarded as the first true album Bossa nova. In addition to unforgettable the Chega of saudade , it contains Desafinado , Rosa morena and Brigas nunca but .
Two others 33T, O amor, O sorriso E have flor and João Gilberto , follow in 1960 and 1961, container, in addition to compositions of Jobim/Moraes ( Corcovado , Insensatez , O amor EM paz ), songs of their elder Dorival Caymmi ( Samba da minha will terra , Saudade da Bahia , Rosa Morena ), of the samba S of the Thirties ( has will primeira vez ), of new compositions of Carlos Lyra ( Você E have , Coisa but linda ) and Roberto Menescal ( O barquinho ), but carried out in this innovative style developped at the point by João. Its style can be summarized in an adaptation to the guitar solo of rhythmic syncopated traditional samba.
Starting from 1962, worked it interesting some jazzmen in the the United States, whose Stan Getz, Gilberto and Jobim goes to New York in order to work on what was to become the best-seller of the Jazz, the 33T Getz/Gilberto , on which the woman of João, Astrud, begins also her career of singer, in particular with the song Garota de Ipanema /The Girl from Ipanema . The disc is a triumph and a historical concert takes place with the Carnegie Hall the October 9th 1964. This last will be recorded besides and a second album Getz/Gilberto vol.2 appears in 1966.
Continuous João Gilberto to play in the Years 1960, but awaits 1970 to produce a new album studio, Ela E Carioca , realized at the time of a stay with Mexico City. The disc João Gilberto , sometimes called the white album of worked, leaves in 1973. Interpreted almost only with the song-guitar, and of a cool sensitivity, almost mystical, this disc hitherto marks a certain distance of the sound of João. This album takes again success Aguas of março and gathers inter alia Falsa bahiana and E preciso perdoar .
In 1976 appears off The Best Two Worlds , new collaboration with Stan Getz gathering the majority of the songs previously interpreted on the white album . Y sings also Miucha, woman of João since 1965. Amoroso , in 1977, comes to add to this voice-guitar the orchestrations of cords of Claus Ogerman, which had collaborated in preceding albums of Tom Jobim. This album takes again Retrato EM branco E preto as well as foreign successes (' S Wonderful , Estate , Besame mucho ). A constant of these albums and following: their repertory consists for almost half of compositions of Jobim, the remainder being recoveries old sambas, even of popular successes of other countries.
In 1980 appears Brasil , collaboration with Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso and Maria Bethânia, the new generation of the Brazilian popular music of then (the movement tropicalist). Old Brazilian popular successes, such as Aquarela C Brasil , No tabuleiro da Bahiana and Bahia COM H , make this album a genuine proclamation of the Brazilian heart. In 1991, the album João with the characteristic not to contain any song of Tom Jobim. But it returns there in 2000 on Voz E Violão , produced by Caetano Veloso, by re-recording its first successes Chega de Saudade and Desafinado .
Personality eccentric that of João Gilberto, famous for its quasi neurotic reclusion and its perfectionism, able to live in a luxury hotel of Rio de Janeiro during years, refusing any interview, not leaving almost never -, or to shorten its spectacles due to disrespectful public, or inadequate wiring for sound. However it continues to give concerts both to Brazil and in the main cities of the world, concerts generally exceeding two hours, and whose several recordings are available on compact disks: Live in Montreux (1985), Prado Pereira de Oliveira (1980), Have Sei That Vou You Amar (1994), Live At Umbria Jazz (1996), and recently In Tokyo (2004).
