A theory of the music is the whole of the theoretical aspects of a musical system particular. There exists, not one, but an infinity of musical theories, each Type of music having his. Any musical system rests indeed on a certain number of uses, more or less constraining, likely to be the theorization object, oral or written.

A theory of the music frequently has a starting point religious, philosophical, or magic; other times, an Arithmetic starting point or scientific - Acoustic.

For example, the musical theory of the ancient Greece is comparison with the Mathématiques, the God X, the Univers, etc - cf the article Harmonie of the spheres.

A theory is frequently codified in the form of a whole of rules intended to support the teaching of the musical practice. In this case, one speaks rather about “musical theory”, this one being likely to become more and more complex and to subdivide oneself in a certain number of distinct branches.

For example, in the Theory of the Western music, one can distinguish: the Musical theory - i.e., general musical teaching -, the Rate/rhythm, the melody, the counterpoint, the Harmony, the Orchestration, the composition, etc

Erudite music and popular music

There is habit to oppose popular music and erudite music in the field of the theory. The popular music would not have a written theory but an implicit theory, which would be the fruit of a tradition. This music is known as of oral tradition. On the other hand, the erudite music is that which forged its theory starting from the writing. The type-setters are well defined. August 1st
