Jimmy Hoffa

James Riddle Hoffa , more known as Jimmy Hoffa (February 14th 1913 - missing the July 30th 1975) was a chief American trade unionist .

Biography

Jimmy Hoffa climbs quickly the hierarchy of the Teamsters, the trade union of the American truck-drivers, of which he becomes the president in 1957.

It takes part in the Money laundering of the Italian-American Mafia, through a complex system using the money of the pension fund of the Teamsters. It becomes, in particular following its bonds with the Mafia, one of the main targets of Robert Kennedy, Ministre for the Justice of the government of his brother, the President, John Fitzgerald Kennedy,

Following a mediatized lawsuit, Hoffa is condemned to 15 years of prison in 1967.

Four years later, in 1971, the president Richard Nixon the pardoned one provided that it does not take part in union actions during 10 years.

It disappears mysteriously the July 30th 1975, one supposes that it died, perhaps assassinated by the Maffia.

In 2006, his/her son James is, since 1998, the current president of Teamsters.

In the popular culture

Danny DeVito carried out in 1992 a film on its life, quite simply called Hoffa , with in the role titrates, Jack Nicholson.

Because of its bonds with the Maffia and its mysterious disappearance, Jimmy Hoffa had an significant impact in the American collective memory. One refers still today to him in films, televised series, cartoons or of the American novels such as American Tabloïd of James Ellroy.
