Is James Emory Garrison, known as Jimmy Garrison , a Contrebassiste of American Jazz , born March 3rd 1933 (1934?) with Miami (Florida) and dead the April 7th 1976 with New York.

Biography

Born in Miami, it passes its youth to Philadelphia. After having studied the clarinet, he learns the Contrebasse in 1953. It commnence its career in orchestras of Rhythm and local blues.

According to the councils of the beater Philly Joe Jones, it settles in New York. One then sees it near Bill Evans, Lennie Tristano, Lee Konitz, Benny Golson, Curtis Fuller and especially of Ornette Coleman with which it makes a round and records Ornette one tenor . From 1960 to 1967, he is the double bass player of the various formations (four-bit byte, quintet…) Saxophonist John Coltrane. The four-bit byte made up of John Coltrane with the Saxophone, Tyner with the Piano, Jimmy Garrison with the Double bass and Elvin Jones with the battery is one of most famous of the history of the jazz. This group remains still today the emblématique figure of the modal Jazz. Coltrane, gradually, adopts the esthetics of the Free jazz and Tyner and Jones are replaced by Alice Coltrane and Rashied Ali. Garrison remains, for its part with the saxophonist until the death of this last in 1967.

At the same time, it Co-directs a group with the pianist Hampton Hawes.

After the death of coltrane, it continues a prolific career. He collaborates with musicians like Ornette Coleman, Sony Rollins, Pharaoh Sanders, archie Shepp, Larry Coryell and especially his former accomplice Elvin Jones. He also teaches with the " Bennington College" and in Wesleyan University".

He dies of a cancer in 1976.
