the Byzantine Empereur Leon III rejects the worship of the images, it is the beginning of the quarrel iconoclast (726-787).

Leon III orders to replace the image of the Christ who surmounted the Bronze Door of the Large palace ( Chalcè ) by a cross. That which is occupied some is massacred by crowd. Leon III must remain about it, and Germanos, iconodule, remains patriarch.
the Iconoclasme can be explained in party by the desire of the emperor to decrease the opposition between Christianity and Islam and that to reconcile the Eastern provinces of the Asia Mineure, where the Pauliciens were numerous. It invites the faithful ones to keep heresy proclaimed by the emperor, with whom it reproaches for not wanting to defend the Italy. It prevents the Romans from paying the tax with Byzance. Leon III sends new exarque to Ravenne, which can nothing make without troop, more especially as the dukes Lombards of Spolète and Bénévent, revolted against their king, support the pope. The emperor is then combined to the king Lombards Luitprand.
