Jim Hines

James Ray " Jim" Hines , born the September 10th 1946 is a former American athlete who held the world records of the 100 m during fifteen years.

Biography

Born with Dumas, Arkansas, Hines was high with Oakland, California and obtained a diploma of McClymonds High School in 1964. He was a player of Baseball in his youths until he was located by a trainer of athletics which detected its talent of runner and made a sprinter of it. With the championships of the United States of 1968 with Sacramento, Hines became the first man to beat the ten second old barrier out of 100 m with a manual timing of 9" 9, but one real-time of 10" 03 - two other athletes Ronnie Ray Smith behind him (real-time 10" 13) and Charles Greene in the other semi-final (real-time 10" 09) had had same official time.

A few months later, with the Olympic Games of summer of Mexico City, Hines, athlete Afro-American, were in a situation tended with racial riots in its country and the threat of Boycott of the black athletes of the American selection Olympic who were disturbed by the discussed presence of the South Africa to the plays.

Hines attint the finale of the 100 m and gained gold. There was a controversy over its exact time but its time of 9" 95, measured electronically was regarded as faster than its 9" 9 measured manually and recognized like the new world records. Hines gained with the relay 4 X 100 m a new title with new world records.

Its record of the 100 m was the reference during nearly 15 years, until in 1983, Calvin Smith establishes a new mark in 9" 93.
