Jijel

Jijel is an Algerian prefecture , chief town of the Wilaya de Jijel in the East of the Kabylie. Its population is estimated at 106.003 inhabitants. It is located at approximately 350 km in the east of Algiers. It is a port on the Mediterranean, at the end Is of a coast with cliff S named the Jijellienne Cornice. She is leant with the mountainous solid mass of Small the Kabylie.

Its name among phenicians was “Igilgili”, which will give thereafter “Igilgilis” then “Djidjel” and “Djidjelli”. According to certain version the original name of the city comes from the Berbère “Ighil Gili” which means, the hill of the exile or “Ighil Ighil” which would like to say hill in hill.

Its inhabitants are called jijlis or jijeliens.

History

Towards Xe century before the Christian era, the Phéniciens, sailors and merchants, in search of bases being able to offer the maximum of safety to their trade, settle in Jijel where they found a counter.

In Ve century before J.C the Romains occupy the small phénico-Berber city, which they raised under Octave in 33, with the row of Colonia Romana, managed by a senate, following the example important Roman cities.

Newcomer of the Germanic countries, the Vandales crossed the Spain and ravel on the North Africa. They destroy Igigili in 429.

The town of Jijel is set up in commune in 1860, and is raised with the row of chief town of Wilaya after the administrative cutting of 1974. And now it is one of the tourist cities of the country.
