Jijé

Jijé , of its true name Joseph Gillain (J.G.), was a Belgian draftsman of cartoon, born the January 13rd 1914 with Gedinne in the Province of Namur and deceased the June 19th 1980 with Versailles (France).

Biography

Jijé was formed at the School of Art of Maredsous and with the École of Brussels Cambers, is the initiator of what the world of the cartoon indicates like the École of Charleroi. This one is with the “Newspaper of Spirou”, founded in Marcinelle by Jean Dupuis in 1938, which the École of Brussels is with the “Newspaper of Tintin”, launched by the editions of the Lombard in 1946.

Draftsmen of Charleroi (Franquin, Morris, Will, Tillieux, Wrapped, Jidéhem, Gos…) are followers of the round bubble, where fuse of the simple dialogs, merry and spontaneous. For their part, their fellow-members and competitor of Brussels (Hergé, Edgar P. Jacobs, Martin…) detail longer, very documented and rather academic texts, in phylactères of rectangular form.

Very early, Jijé shows a plentiful imagination, creating very many heroes whom he does not hesitate to then entrust to others, on a purely provisional or final basis. Pillar of the newspaper Spirou, it has remainder itself briefly taken again, in 1940, the character of Spirou, created originally by the French Robert Velter, who signed Rob-Vel. Small the groom in red uniform will be the object of a true adoption in chain. Thereafter, Jijé will restore it in Rob-Vel, which will yield of them then all the rights to Dupuis. The editor marcinellois will then entrust the series successively to Jijé (which will invent a companion to him, Fantasio ) then in Franquin (inventive of the Marsupilami) until 1967 then with other draftsmen who took over. He entered to Pilote , this French weekly magazine which had, at the end them the Sixties, to make pass the data base of the world of the children to that of the adults. It is there that it begun again the knights of the sky, Tanguy and Laverdure of the hands of Uderzo on scenario of Jean-Michel Charlier.

Among creations of Jijé, it is necessary to quote Blondin and Cirage (1939, created in the Christian press), the detective Jean Valhardi (begun again by Eddy Paape and Rene Follet) and Jerry Spring . This last, which will survive dead of Jijé in 1980, directly inspired the character of Blueberry born under the pencil of Gir in “Pilot”. Jijé also put in images the biographies of Gift Bosco, Christophe Colomb and Baden Powell. The data base of the pioneers wanted to be edifying.

He saw himself decreeing the Grand Prix Saint-Michel 1975.

In 2004, a Jijé Museum opened its doors, which presents its work, like that of many collaborators of the golden age of the Belgian cartoon.
