Jiangsu

The Jiangsu zh-Hant 江蘇 (zh-Hans 江苏) zh-Hans 省 ( pinyin : jiāngsū) is a Chinese province coastal located directly at the North of Shanghai. It counts 75 million inhabitants. Its capital, Nanjing (Nankin), city of more than 6 million inhabitants, and considerable historical importance is regarded as the capital of China by the Taiwanese government. Jiangsu is the fifth Chinese province by the population and the second for total GDP. The internal economic disparities are considerable: certain cities of the South, such Suzhou, are twice richer than the provincial average.

Geography

Jiangsu is a province of plains. The province has many rivers, in particular, in the North of the course of downstream of the Chang Jiang, first Chinese river, and of the Huai He. The irrigation and canal systems (Large Channel) are well developed.

The interior differences are important. The southern part, the town of Suzhou in particular, is for a long time known for its prosperity. It profits moreover today from the proximity of Shanghai. One speaks Wu there (zh-Hans 吴语). More in north, one often speaks Jianghuai (zh-Hans 江淮官话), a variety of Mandarin, but, often, many cultural features recall China of the South. To give an account of this complexity, one tends since ten years to distinguish three areas in Jiangsu: south, the area where one speaks Wu, the center, around Nanjing, and North, in the North of Chang Jiang, which one can attach to China of North.

Administrative divisions

Jiangsu is divided into thirteen prefectures: Nanjing (zh-Hans 南京 Nankin), capitals provincial, Zhenjiang (zh-Hans 镇江), Changzhou (zh-Hans 常州), Wuxi (zh-Hans 无锡), Suzhou (zh-Hans 苏州), Yangzhou (zh-Hans 扬州), Taizhou (zh-Hans 泰州), Nantong (zh-Hans 南通), Xuzhou (zh-Hans 徐州), Suqian (zh-Hans 宿迁}), [[Huaiyin]] ({{Lang zh-Hans 淮阴}}), [[Lianyungang]] ({{Lang zh-Hans 连云港}), [[Yancheng]] ({{Lang zh-Hans 盐城}}).
