Jets of Winnipeg

The Jets of Winnipeg is old a frankness from the National league of hockey. Moved in 1996 with Phoenix, it bears today the name of the Coyotes of Phoenix.

History

The team of hockey of the Jets of Winnipeg is one of the first to belong to the Worldwide association of hockey at the time of her formation in 1972. The league acquires an immediate public recognition when, as of the first year, the Jets engage Bobby Hull, high-speed motorboat of the National league of hockey. They are also the first to be recruited, in 1974, of the European players, of which Swedish stars Anders Hedberg and Ulf Nilsson. The team gains three of the seven championships of the AMH, including that of 1979, the last of this league.

In 1979, whereas Michael Gobuty is majority owner and president, Winnipeg Arena, their home port, is increased to contain 15.250 seats and the Jets make their entry in Smythe division of the LNH. However, according to the provisions of fusion, they must sacrifice 10 players. They gain only 29 matches during their the first 2 seasons in the LNH, but thanks to the trainer Tom Watt (replaced since), they seize again and finish in second place in 1981-82. In 1981, with the fishing out of Flagstone Hawerchuk, the Jets acquire their first large high-speed motorboat with the offensive, but that is not enough to guarantee success to them. They know their best season in 1984-85 and are classified fourth of the league with 96 points. They will not succeed in exceeding the eliminating heats of Smythe division, formed powerful teams (Oilers d' Edmonton and Flames of Calgary).

As the Jets do not manage to go to the finales, the financial losses accumulate and it is feared more and more that they are not yielded to American interests. In 1991, the team is sold with a Canadian group and receives the financial aid of the province, which promises to keep it in Winnipeg. With the expansion of the LNH, the Jets pass to the central division of the Conference West in 1993-94.

The modern absence of stage and the increasingly high wages of the players involve the bankruptcy of the owners.

In 1995, at the time when the Jets are about to be sold with Mineapolis, the public leaves to shift to save the team. Even if the three stages of government agree to build another stage, a new group of purchasers, formed in May 1995, does not succeed in collecting the required funds with the survival of the team. The Jets pass then to the hands of American interests and, on July 1st 1996, they take officially the name of the Coyotes of Phoenix.
