Jethro
Jéthro is the name of the father-in-law of Moïse and Réuel , but also Hobab .
The Coran names it Chu `ayb it seems there the prophet of the Madian. From where its nickname of Abu Madian (" the father, or the man, of Madianites"), which gives into dialectal Boumediene.
In the Bible
After having fled Egypt, Moïse takes refuge among Madian Arabs. It meets their large priest Jéthro and marries his daughter Séphora (or Cippora). The same book gives to the father girls of the sacrificator of Madian the name of Réuel . As for the name of Hobab it is quoted in the book of the Judges like the beautiful father of Brace without more. It is under the name of Jéthro that the book of the Exode gives some details. Before setting out again towards Egypt with his/her brother Aaron, Moïse will greet Jéthro. Brace leaves the country of Madian with “his wife and her sons. ” During the voyage, Séphora circoncit their son.
Brace accompanied by Hebrew passes in the country of Madian after having fulfilled its mission of making them leave Egypt. It is Jéthro which goes to the meeting of Brace. It is accompanied by Séphora, which were repudiated, and by wire of Brace. Jéthro offers a sacrifice in which all take part Moïse and the Hebrew X move towards the the Sinai where Moïse receives the law.
Years later Moïse enters in war against the madianites. Those fear to see Hebrew being installed on their grounds and Moïse reproach with the madianites, especially with their wives, to pervert Hebrew. The madianites are crushed, the women killed as well as the male children, only are saved the virgin girls.
In Coran
Chu `ayb is the prophet of Madian. Their fault was to falsify the weights and to defraud on the goods. The madianites were punished by an earthquake. Chu `ayb adds an injunction to give up the idols for single God.
Nothing explicit in Coran makes it possible to identify Chu `ayb in Jéthro if it is not that they are both of the madianites. For the tradition brought back by Tabarî that is not any doubt. For example according to Tabarî, Chu `ayb request in Moïse eight years of work mercenary for the price of his Séphora daughter. It is only after this time that Moïse marries Séphora. Before Moïse does not turn over to Egypt, Chu `ayb gives him the stick which will change into snake in front of the Pharaon.
