Jesús de Polanco

Jesus de Polanco is a press baron Spanish, born on November 7th, 1929 with Madrid and dead on July 21st, 2007 with Madrid.

He is the founder of the daily newspaper El Pais and the owner of Prisa, the first press group and of media in Spain. He was a Spanish press baron and one of the most influential men of his country.

Biography

Orphan very early, it starts in the working life by selling encyclopedias with the door with door.

Very cultivated, its fortune is estimated in 2006 at 3 billion euros, which makes of him the 11th fortune in Spain and the 287e world fortune, according to the magazine Forbes .

He died in Madrid, on July 21st, 2007 of the continuations of one long illness at the 77 years age.

He has four children, of which Ignacio de Polanco which has to succeed to him the head of the group Prisa.

Its career

In 1958, it founds the publisher Santillana, initially specialized in the legal works, then in teaching.

After having made fortune in the edition, it founds in 1973, El Pais, which develops starting from 1976 after the death of the Général Free. It became in 2007, the Spanish daily newspaper paying more read and the floret of the group Prisa (CA 2,8 billion euro for a benefit of 229 million euros in 2006).

Through the group Prisa, that it controls to 64%, it is present in the press (El Pais, Cinco Dias, As), in the edition, the radio (Cadena SER) and in television (Cuatro, Sogecable). He is also owner many media in Latin America (radio Chilean Ibero American Radio Chile, Colombian daily newspaper El Tiempo…). With the Portugal, where it has the group Capital Media. In France it took a participation of 15% in the daily newspaper Le Monde. On the whole, it employs throughout the world fourteen thousand people in 22 country.

Politically, it is close to the Spanish socialist party and in particular to the former Prime Minister Felipe Gonzales. He is a savage combatant against the Spanish conservative right and its publications against the Popular party (in particular in the Années 1990 did not hesitate to engage and more recently in March 2007.
