Jerry Butler

Jerry Butler , born the December 8th 1939 with Sunflower, in the the Mississippi, is an American singer of Soul called The Ice Man .

Biography

He moves with Chicago with his parents with old three years. Inhabitant with Cabrini-Green with Chicago, it begins with the church while singing in various choruses at the sides from Curtis Mayfield.

A group of Chattanooga, in the Tennessee, formed in 1956 by six members, decides to make like the other groups of the time, to go in a big city, this case Chicago. The group The Roosters thus moves in 1957, but three members of the group cannot follow. Jerry Butler is taken as substitute and request with Curtis Mayfield to join the group. They are then discovered by Eddie Thomas, which becomes their manager and changes their name for The Impressions. They sign a hit: " For Your Precious Love", on the label Vee Jay.

Butler leaves the group in 1959 to launch out in a career solo. It has a small success with the title " Lost" then in 1960 with " He Will Station-wagon Your Heart" , on the label Vee Jay. After other small hits, it starts to work with Gamble & Huff, which produce the majority of these great successes, included " The Ice Man Cometh" and " Only the Strong Survive", on the label Mercury.

The hits become then rare and Jerry Butler engages in the policy by supporting Harold Washington, first black mayor of Chicago.
