Jerome Carrein

Jerome Carrein , born in 1939, dead on June 23rd, 1977 with Douai, was the last but one guillotine of France.

October 27th, 1975, with Arleux, in the Pas-de-Calais, Carrein, father of five children, semi-vagrant, tuberculous and alcoholic, commits a dreadful crime. Meeting small C., 8 years, girl of the owner of a coffee where it has its practices, it has a sexual instinct suddenly. Under pretext of go to seek soft foods for fishing in its company, it involves it towards the close marshes. There, it tries to violate it, before strangling it and of the walnut tree.

Decree the following day, it acknowledges the crime. Judged by the Court of Assizes of the Pas-de-Calais, to Saint-Omer, he is condemned to died on July 12th, 1976. Sixteen days later, Christian Ranucci, condemned to died for a similar crime, is guillotine with the prison of Baumettes, Marseilles.

But Carrein signed an appeal in Cassation, which is accepted in October. It will be rejugé the 1^er February 1977 in front of bases of the Northern , with Douai. But two weeks earlier, the assassin Patrick Henry, it so fatal of a child, have escaped with the capital punishment in front of bases of Troyes thanks to the talent of his lawyer, main Robert Badinter, and the resentment of the population is very sharp. For the second time, Carrein is condemned to death.

Mid-June, the recourse in grace of Jerome Carrein is rejected by the president Valery Giscard d'Estaing. Carrein is decapitated on June 23rd, 1977 at 4 a.m. 30, in the court of the prison of Douai, by the Bourreau Marcel Chevalier. After him, only one condemned, Hamida Djandoubi, will be guillotine in France.
