Jeopardy!

Jeopardy! is a Jeu televised created by Merv Griffin (also creative of the Wheel of fortune ) and diffused since the March 30th 1964, with the the United States.

The name comes from the English verb to jeopardize , to put in danger , since the players at the end of the play put in danger their profits to gain more or all to lose.

Principle of the play

Starting from answers, three candidates must find the question corresponding. Each good answer brings back a sum, each error makes it lose. They can choose between six topics and five values of answers.

The two first sleeves make clash the candidates according to their speed with buzzer to answer. During the last, they answer in writing to find a question, and secretly bet a sum on their answers. Gaining is that which earned the most money during the emission and has the right to return for the following one.

In the United States, the rules could vary. Mainly, since 1984, the two losers set out again with gifts of consolation, then sums allowing them at least to compensate for the cost of the voyage to Los Angeles, where the emission is recorded. The goal is that the three players misent to gain at the time of the third handle.

History

In the United States

The emission was diffused for three periods:
  • from March 30th, 1964 to January 3rd, 1975 on NBC, presented by Art Fleming and the voice of Gift Pardo,
  • from October 2nd, 1978 to March 2nd, 1979 on NBC, The Jeopardy AlNew! was presented by Art Fleming,

Since September 17th, 1984, the play is presented by Alex Trebek and the voice of Johnny Gilbert. In 2004, the play aroused a great interest when a player gained 64 times of continuation and gained more than 2,5 million dollars.

Steven Dorfman was one of the most prolific writers since 1984. He wrote more than 50.000 questions until his death on January 4th, 2004. He gained 6 Emmy Awards.

During its history, Jeopardy! gained ten Daytime Emmy for the best television game and was parodied many times, in particular by the televised comedy of sketches Saturday Night Live for its special programs of celebrities.

Adaptations

The play knew adaptations in several countries.

In France, the play was presented in the Nineties by Philippe Risoli and was diffused a few seasons on TF1.

To the Quebec, the play was presented by Réal Giguère on the Réseau VAT of 1991 up to 1993.
