In 1959, thus it belongs to the handle of designers advised with the Royal Mail to create both stamps 300e birthday of the general Office of the letters. If creations of Matthews are not selected for the series emitted in 1960, they reached the level of the tests in printing works. It is thus regularly invited to present models.

Colourist and lettror of the type Thing

It is in years 1970 that Jeffery Matthews intervenes on the standard '' Machin '', the series of everyday usage which represents the effigy of the queen Elisabeth II since 1967. According to the requests of the British stations, it provides drawings, letters and figures for the new values, but it is known philatelists to have to constitute a palette for the type Machin in the years 1980.

In 1971, it draws the symbols of the regional series ( Countries ) which allows the Scotland, the Northern Ireland, the Wales and the island of Man to have Machin mixing the queen and their respective culture. It takes again its drawings to refine them later a few years.

The profile of the type Machin is generally of a color clearer than the bottom, according to the initial intention of the creator of the stamp, Arnold Machin. In 1976, Matthews conceives three colors for the large sizes from now on photogravés of one, two and five pounds sterling.

It is regularly called to adapt the Police of writing Perpetua to the news facial values. For example, Matthews redraws the zero in the oval (rather than round in Perpetua ) for best made visual. He also manages to make enter of the long facial values.

In the middle of the years 1980, Jeffery Matthews completes a work of rationalization of the colors which makes it famous of the collectors of the type Machin , since it respects the intention of Arnold Machin of a clear color for the profile on the corresponding dark color of the background. In spite of the failure of several systems of rationalization of the colors and their postal uses, it provides a broad palette to Royal Mail. Its work on the colors is honoured at the time of Stamp Show of London, in May 2000, by a block of eight stamps to the type Machin . One of both Vignette S, which it carried out itself, represents a pallet with its initial (intermingled “JM”).
