Jeanne of Flanders
Jeanne of Flanders , born in 1295 died in 1374, girl of Louis I {{er}} of Flanders, count de Nevers, and of Jeanne de Rethel, countess of Rethel.
She married Jean of Brittany, (1294 † 1345), count de Montfort, and had:
- * Jean IV (1339 † 1399), duke of Brittany and Count de Richmond.
- *Jeanne (1341 † 1399), married to Ralph Basset hound of Drayton.
With died of Jean III of Brittany, Jean de Monfort disputed the duchy with his niece Jeanne de Penthièvre, which involves a twenty year old war called war of the Two Jeannes with the War of succession of Brittany. When Jean de Montfort was made prisoner, it took the direction of its army and continued the fight, which allowed his/her son Jean IV to make the conquest of the duchy of Brittany.
Jeanne of Flanders remained famous for a brilliant deed. Whereas the troops of Charles of Blois besieged Hennebont, in which Jeanne was cut off, that Ci managed to galvanize the troops and the civilians so that all the attacks fûrent pushed back. One night, to the head of a detachment of soldiers, it left the city by igniting the tents of the unfavourable troops. Then, thanks to this diversion, she managed to join Auray from where she been able to bring back 600 knights, which allowed the release of the city. After that, Jeanne of Flanders was called Jeanne the Flame.
