Jeanne de Marle

Jeanne de Bar , born in 1415, died in 1462, was countess of Marle and Soissons of 1415 with 1462. She was girl of Robert de Bar, count de Marle and of Soissons, and Jeanne de Béthune.

His/her father died the year of his birth, killed with the Bataille of Azincourt and his mother remaria in 1418 with Jean of Luxembourg, count de Ligny. A few years earlier, his/her father had given up the Duché of Bar, but while posing like condition that if Edouard III and Louis, the two wire then survivor of the duke Robert Ier de Bar would die without male descent, it were authorized to claim with the succession. Edouard III had died in Azincourt, and Louis, had intended for a clerical career, Maria not, but designated in 1420 like successor in Barrois his great nephew Rene of Anjou. Jeanne then decided to assert Barrois.

There existed another litigation between Jean of Luxembourg and Rene of Anjou, concerant the possession of the county of Own way. Jean of Luxembourg was made confirm the possession of Own way by the duke of Bedford, then attacked and took the castle in 1425. It is only in 1433 that a final arrangement take place: in exchange of the renunciation of Jeanne de Bar of Barrois, Rene gives up the county of Own way. This same year died Pierre of Luxembourg, Count of Saint-pol. and brother of Jean of Luxembourg. It left son a fifteen year old Louis of Luxembourg (1418 † 1475) whose Jean was made the guard. Jean of Luxembourg being without wire, it designated Louis like his successor and arranged the marriage between Louis of Luxembourg as a Jeanne de Bar.

This marriage was celebrated the July 16th 1435 and the husbands had:

  • Jean († 1476), count de Marle and of Soissons
  • Pierre II († 1482), count of Saint-pol., Soissons and Marle
  • Charles (1447 † 1509), archbishop of Laon
  • Antoine († 1519), count de Roussy, of Brienne then of Ligny
  • Jacqueline († 1511), married in 1455 in Philippe de Croy († 1511), count de Porcien
  • Helene († 1488), married in 1466 in Jean of Savoy († 1491), baron de Faucigny
