Jean the Chaplain

Holy Jean the Chaplain, born in second half of the 6th century and dead in November 619 or 620, patriarch of Alexandria, is an extreme example of charity.

History
Born with Cyprus in second half of the Life century, it enters the Église after the loss of his wife. He becomes patriarch of Alexandria in 608, and luted against the Monophysisme. He had to leave Alexandria, before dying in 619 or 620.
According to the Golden Legend , it gave all that it had with the poor, that it called its “lords”. A rich person, who saw that Jean did not have on his bed more that rags, offered a very invaluable cover to him. But during the night which followed, Jean could not sleep while thinking of all his “lords” who could have been covered thanks to his value, also the following day sold it and distributed the money to the poor. The rich person discovered it, and a cover repurchased to him, that Jean resold at once. The rich person still repurchased a cover, while saying to Jean: “We will see who will weary ourselves, you to sell, or me to repurchase. ”
