Its life
Wire of Gonzalo de Yepes and Catalina Alvarez, Juan de Yepes is born in 1542 in Fontiveros as a Castille Old woman; certain historians advance the year 1540. The family saw Tissage. The Gonzalo father dies in 1545, as his/her Luis brother. The remainder of the family then knows exclusion, the wandering and misery.
In 1551, the family settles in Medina del Campo where it finds work. Juan attends the schools of the city, that of the brothers of the Doctrine, then the college of the Jesuits, and he works at the hospital with multiple tasks.
In 1563, at twenty years, under the patronym of Jean de Saint-Matthias, it takes the dress in the Carmelite friars.
After the year of noviciate and the religious profession, it leaves for Salamanque to the Saint-Andrew college the Carmelite friars to achieve the cycle of the studies scholastics. In 1567, it returns a few days in Medina to celebrate its first mass in the presence of his/her brothers, of his family and the friends of the convent. It meets Therese d' Avila (1515 - 1582) which has just founded in the city Carmel of its Reform and wishes to involve some brothers in his Reform of the Order… Juan thought then of Chartreuse like more intense place of contemplation, Therese dissuades some…
One year later, in 1568, it inaugurates with two other companions with Duruelo, a life of return to the primitive practices of the Order. Very quickly, Juan becomes formative novel members. Several new foundations are followed from there: Mancera, Pastrana. Therese was sent by the authorities of the Church to the Incarnation of Avila, the large convent where it had entered at twenty years, to introduce its Reform there. In 1572, it made there come Juan to residence, with another déchaux brother, especially to accompany the moniales spiritually.
Between on December 2nd 1577 and on August 17th 1578, it is then put at the secrecy in the convent of Tolède by the monks of the order who fight the Réforme. After its escape, to try to alleviate the situation, the brothers of the Reform send it to Jaén in the south of Spain. It accompanies also Therese in her last foundations. It still opens close to the university of Baeza a college carmélitain for the young students of the Reform.
After the death of Therese in 1582, he becomes prior of the convent of Grenade… Là, Juan reveals all its gifts of spiritual Master and writer; it composes of other poems and it writes all its great Writings; it shows also its gifts of superior of communities of the Reform. Always accompanied by a laic brother, to back of ass usually, he travels much to encourage the new convents of brothers and moniales. In 1589, he is elected prior of the convent of Segovia.
Whereas it was present at the beginning of the Reform and that it assumed various responsibilities for them, except that of provincial superior, it ends up being marginalized again in 1591, at Réformés themselves. A general Chapitre wants to send it to found with the Mexico; it is withdrawn in the hermitage close of Peñuela, on August 10th, carrying a fever which will not leave it any more. September 28th, it goes to the convent nearest in Ubeda, to be made there look after. Surrounded of the brothers of the small community, he dies in the night from December 13rd to 14th 1591, after having asked the Prieur to read as a prayer for the dying the Cantique of the canticles which he had sung in him all his life.
