Jean of Vienna (Pares, 1321 or 1341 - Nicopolis (Bulgaria), 1396) was a Général and Admiral French during the Guerre One hundred Year old.
It began its military career at the 9 years age and was made knight at 21 years. At 24 years, it was named Captain-general Franche-Comté. He was then governor of Calais when the city was taken by the king d' Angleterre Edouard III and was made prisoner.
In 1373, Charles V named it Admiral de France . It reorganized the navy, set up an important schedule construction, created the coastguards, organized monitorings on the coasts and delivered licenses to build and sell boats.
Jean of Vienna was the first to understand that the naval operations could attack the England and it led several forwardings against Rye and the island of Wight.
Between 1381 and 1385, it fought against the Dutch, in particular at the time of the Bataille of Rosbec. In 1385, it unloaded in Scotland with 180 ships in order to invade the England but had to make retirement.
After Charles VI succeeded his father Charles V on the throne of France, the navy declined because Charles VI did not share the interest of his father. Jean of Vienna then joined the crusade of the king Sigismond of Hungary against the Ottoman Empire. He was killed at the time of the Bataille of Nicopolis in Bulgaria.
Several boats of the French Marine were named in its honor. Among others, one finds:
- a Cruiser of the class Galissonière : finished in 1937, it was scuttled in November 1942 with Toulon.
- an anti-submarine frigate of the class Georges Leygues , FASM Jean of Vienna (D643), in service since 1984.
