Jean Balthazar Marie Mallard , Viscount of Varende , known under the name of Jean of Varende , born the May 24th 1887 with the castle of Bonneville with Chamblac, dead the June 8th 1959 with Paris, is a writer French.
Among the hundreds of New S which account its work, the Norman soil (in particular the Country of Ouche) constitutes the principal framework. Tales and novels are added to it whose numbered editions are required today.
But the attraction of the sea, its passion for navigation, but also Brittany and Spain, the setting in scene of Norman small landed proprietor but peasant, country priests also, medium to which it belongs and nostalgia of the Ancien Mode form the essential screen of its work. Its at the same time sentimental and romantic writing is very attached on the ground, within the meaning of the plowed ground, liked, transmitted intact. She seeks to describe the purity while knowing to express the man in its through and her errors. The accounts often have as a bottom a kind of ideal transmission of the rural traditions of the past, as well in the thatched cottages as in the castles, as it describes in a few beautiful books. Its work is to be put in bond at that of his/her fathers in letters: in particular Barbey d' Aurevilly and Flaubert, other Norman. In the man with the gloves of fabric , it with the audacity to add two news to the Diabolic Constable of the Letters.
This catholic traditionalist with the tormented faith was moreover monarchist, near to the newspaper the French Action . This political position is probably the cause of a kind of " setting under scellés" of its writings, now ignored, following the example others Henry Bordeaux, Paul Le Bourget or Michel of Saint-Pierre, so prolix and read of their alive.
One also owes him of many biographies of quality (such of the princes, William the Conqueror, Anne of Austria; mistresses of the kings in the beautiful slaves ; sailors or servants of the crown, the Marshal of Tourville, Surcouf, Jean Bart, Suffren, the Duke of Saint-Simon; saints priests, Holy Vincent of Paul, the holy priest of Ars, Gift Bosco; and of Norman famous, Flaubert, Charlotte de Corday, the family of Broglie; and of the chouans, Cadoudal, etc). These biographies leave a big part to the feeling.
Several of its news, published in several newspapers as of the Years 1930, 1940 and 1950 were the subject of publications in the form of collections (see below the bibliography of this author), where the chronological order of the accounts gives the feeling of a wooden tile continuity.
One him also of the trilogies of ladies of the manor families in the storms according to 1789, as the series which gathers the rider alone (1956), pensive Cœur (1957) and the partisane (1960, posthumous publication), (family of Anville), where well various novels related to the families of Tainchebraye with Nose-of-Leather, gentleman of love (1937), the Centaur of God (1938) and Man' d' Arc (1939).
In 1919, he marries Jeanne Kuhlmann-Roederer, widow of Raoul Latham. The couple settles definitively in Bonneville, with the family castle. From this union, will be born a son, Eric, in 1922.
The beginnings of Varende in literature are difficult: it essuie of many refusal of Parisian editors, but publishes some tales in the Mercure de France . It is the Maugard editor, of Rouen, which will ensure its notoriety by publishing a series of news entitled Pays of Ouche (1934), prefaced by the Duc of Broglie. In 1937, it obtains three votes at the Goncourt price with Nose-of-Leather . The publications consequently will follow one another, assured by the editors Plon or Grasset.
Its talent is celebrated by listened critics, in particular in the mediums of right-hand side and extreme-right-hand side, such Thierry Maulnier and Robert Brasillach. Its literary successes enable him to continue the restoration of the castle of Chamblac.
During the Occupation, he collaborates in newspapers such as Gringoire , I am everywhere , Small Parisian the , where its chronicles are comfortably paid to him. December 17th, 1942, he is elected with the Académie Goncourt. Shortly after its election, it will give an article to the Franco-German Cahiers , in which it will exaltera the national Revolution. These articles will be worth to him, after the Release, to belong to the authors sanctioned by the national committee of the writers, responsible for purification. Its name however will be striped " list noire" , because the committee considered, overall, that the contributions of Varende to these newspapers " collaborationistes" were before very with character arts persons (it was indeed almost exclusively about tales and news, published since in collections).
Varende resigned however of the Academy Goncourt in December 1944, which perhaps avoided an exclusion to him. Its favor near the public will however not be contradicted.
In 1954, Varende is candidate, without success, with the French Academy, obtaining only eleven votes. One second candidature will not lead more in 1956.
He dies on June 8th, 1959. He is buried with his ancestors with the cemetery of Chamblac, near the castle.
Impassioned by the sea, but not having never been able to embark because of a fragile health, Jean of Varende carried out an impressive collection of models of boats and ships, composed of more than 2000 elements. Part of this collection is always preserved in its castle of Chamblac. He was member corresponding of the Académie of Navy.
