Jean of Lancaster

Jean of Lancaster (June 20th 1389 - September 14th 1435, Rouen), is a family member royal of England. Third wire of Henri IV of England and Marie de Bohun, he is the brother Puîné of Henri V and the uncle of Henri VI.

Career

It is named Connétable England by his father (1403), Duc of Bedford and Count de Richmond by his brother (1414) and finally general lieutenant of the kingdom during the campaigns of Henri V in France.

It helps his brother strongly to conquer the France and is named regent of this kingdom with died of this prince, of which it proclaims the son Henri VI, at the same time king de France and of England (1422). General captain in Normandy (1422 - 1435) and captain of Paris (1423 - 1429), it is also made name Duc of Anjou and Count of Maine but does not manage to benefit from these territories.

Moreover, it strongly tarnishes its glory in 1431 by exerting important pressures on the ecclesiastical court in charge of the lawsuit of Jeanne d' Arc, ridiculing the rights of defense and leading the Maid of Orleans to the torment (in 1456, the lawsuit in rehabilitation ordered by the Pape Calixte III will note very important irregularities in the first lawsuit, will declare its conclusions null and nonwhich occurred and will proclaim the innocence of Jeanne d' Arc). Its final failure comes owing to the fact that it cannot reduce resistances which do not cease appearing in the north of the the Loire all while not managing to take foot in the south. Constantly on the defensive, the maitien of its troops involve heavy financial expenses. It must call upon the Trésor English while reinforcing the taxation in France, which is worth to him the unpopularity on the two sides of the Manche. With the wire of the English reverses, it is folded up little by little towards Normandy. He is the founder of the Université of Caen (1432).

The May 13rd 1423 with Troyes, it marries Anne of Burgundy (1404 - November 14th 1432, Paris) girl of Jean without Peur, duke of Burgundy and Marguerite of Bavaria. Widower, it remarie with Thérouanne, the April 22nd 1433, with Jacquette of Luxembourg (1416? - May 30th 1472), girl of Pierre Ier of Luxembourg and Marguerite of the Beams. It does not have any posterity of its 2 unions.

He dies suddenly the September 14th 1435 with Rouen and is buried in the cathedral of the city.

Art lover

The duke of Bedford financed several enluminés manuscripts. Its name remained attached to the one of the most famous manuscripts of, the Heures of Bedford , that his first wife, Anne of Burgundy had received from her Jean father without Peur like wedding gift.
