Jean de Poutrincourt , of its true patronym Jean de Biencourt , baron of Poutrincourt and Saint-Just is a Picardy gentleman born in 1557.
After having spent long years to the armies, in the party of the League, among the troops of the duke of Aumale of which it was one of most brilliant captains the, illustrating in particular during the head office of Paris against Henri IV, it was found demolishes its fortune. But this cultivated, courageous and just man obtained the forgiveness of the king who presented it to Pierre Dugua of Mons from which he became the lieutenant when they left together in Acadie in 1604 where Jean de Poutrincourt left with the firm intention to be established there.
Pierre Dugua of Mons granted to him the concession of Port-Royal, which made of him the first known lord of the News-France. Constrained to leave the Acadie in 1607, after the revocation of the Monopoly of Treats furs by the king, it could return there in 1610, having sold its goods and borrowed much to be able to embark. But this chronic lack of means forced it to negotiate with Madam of Guercheville and to accept the installation of the Jésuites on the colony, which created important tensions.
In 1613, Port-Royal, left with the command of his/her son Charles, was plundered by the English of the captain Argall. Jean de Poutrincourt could return to Port-Royal in 1614 to see his devastated dwelling there. However, completely ruined, badgered by the creditors, separated from goods with his wife, continued in justice by Madam of Guercheville and the Jesuits, it had to give up the part.
His/her son, Charles de Biencourt could nevertheless, after a fashion, maintain a presence in Port-Royal, not like a true colony but as a simple counter of furs and made there pass some people. As for Jean de Poutrincourt, constrained to take again service in the armies of the king, it was killed in 1615 Champagne during the seat of the Méry-on-Seine.
