Jean de Poltrot de Méré
Jean de Poltrot (1537 - 1563), lord of Mother or Mérey, is a gentleman of the Angoumois which assassinated the duke François de Guise, chief of the royal catholic army during the wars of religion.
Biographical elements
Poltrot lived a certain time in Spain from which he knew the language. It is useful then as spy in the context of the war against Spain.Protesting convinced, it decides to kill the duke of Own way. It gets under way for the catholic camp occupied besieging Orleans. In the evening of February 18th 1563, it is put in ambush along a road by which must pass the duke of Own way, fact fire with a gun and flees.
It is captured the next day. Under the Torture Poltrot states to have acted at the instigation of Soubise, of the admiral of Coligny and Theodore de Bèze, then retracts before renewing these consents. The controversy animates the court during very long years because Coligny declares to be delighted by dead by Own way, but not to have nothing to do with this attack .
Jean de Poltrot de Méré is condemned to be quartered. He is torture victim on March 18th, 1563.
