Jean de Liçarrague
Jean de Liçarrague , Joannes Leizarraga or Iean de Liçarrague was born with Briscous (Labourd), in 1506. The data on its youth are very few, although it is known that it was ordered priest. Since 1559, it follows the current of the Réforme, which involved persecutions and imprisonments. As much from other Protestants, it was protected by Jeanne III from Navarre.
On the initiative of the Synod of Pau held in 1564, it translates the first version of the New Testament into Basque or will euskara , which was published by the printing works of Pierre Hautin of La Rochelle in September 1571. Its translation was revised by four shepherds Basque S, the souletins Piarres Landetcheverry, Tardetz, Sanz Tartas and Joannes Etcheverry, this last called " small basque" , native of Saint-Jean-with-Luz. The translation combines characteristics of the dialect labourdin with elements of the dialect Souletin. One regards this work of Liçarrague as the first attempt to establish the bases of one will euskara unified.
Jean de Liçarrague included/understood, in addition to will euskara, the French, the Castillan, the Latin and the old Greek .
Liçarrague dies in 1601 with Labastide-Clairence (Low-Navarre), where he was shepherd of the church reformed during three decades.
