Jean Xiphilin

Jean Xiphilin was a Byzantine historian of the end of the 11th century.

Nephew of the Patriarch of Constantinople Jean VIII Xiphilin, it lived under the reign of the emperor Michel Ducas.

It left a summary ( épitomé ) of the Roman Histoire of Dion Cassius, very invaluable because of the loss of almost all the original work. This summary, which is joined to all the editions of Dion, was translated into Latin by the Cardinal of Armagnac and was published by the Estienne (Paris, 1551 and 1592). It was translated into French by Boisguillebert, 1674, and by the President Cousin, 1678 and 1686.
