Jean XI Vekkos

Jean XI Vekkos (or Bekkos) was patriarch of Constantinople from January 11th, 1276 to December 26th, 1282. Theologist, it forms in particular part of the embassy that to Michel VIII Paleologist to Louis IX with Tunis sent little before this last does not die. At the time of the crisis of the Union, it is initially against the Union of the two churches before being convinced by the emperor of sound well done. Following the abdication of the patriarch Joseph of Constantinople on January 11th, 1276, he is elected patriarch the same year on May 26th. He tried with little success to convince the Byzantine high authorities to adopt the cause of the Union but fails. He convenes a synod besides where he excommunicates the majority of the anti-unionistic chiefs without results. The successor of Michel VIII Andronic II is against the Union and demolishes Jean XI Vekkos of his role of patriarchate (December 26th, 1282) to replace it by Joseph of Constantinople. Jean Vekkos died in 1296.
