Jean Walter

Biography

Graduate in 1902 of the special School of architecture. Wounded during the war of 1914, it finishes it as military attach3e of Georges Clémenceau. Having detected in 1925, close to Oujda in Morocco, a rich rich person layer of lead and zinc, it founds in 1935 the Company of the mines of Zellidja which will bring fortune and notoriety to him. He marries in 1938, in second weddings, the widow of the merchant and art critic Paul Guillaume. He founds into 1939 the Zellidja purses which make it possible high-school pupils to concretize projects of original voyage. Imprisoned in Fresnes for facts of resistance in 1945, it writes its theoretical work there Renaissance of medical architecture .

Principal works

Jean Walter very early is interested in the social Housing, like with the concept of garden city. He preaches the industrialization of the building and the rationalization of the control of the building sites, principles which he will apply to hospital architecture. He builds in 1908 two working cities in Montbeliard for the Japy manufacturers, then a whole of houses built around a garden in Paris (Small Alsace located at the 10 of the street Daviel - Paris XIIIe) for the company the family dwelling rested by the Viollet abbot and another garden city with Draveil in 1914. He realizes in 1931 some buildings of luxury in XVIe district of Paris and he starts to specialize in hospital architecture. In collaboration with Urbain Cassan, it builds the Beaujon hospital with Clichy in 1932-1935 and the hospital city of Lille in the 1934-1953 then new medical college of Paris (on the site of the hospital of Charity in the Life district) in 1937-1954. It is thus Jean Walter who, the first, introduced in France the American model of the hospital in height, still called " hospital bloc".
