Jean Vavasseur-Desperriers

Professor of modern history at the university university of Lille - III Charles-of-Gaulle, the work of Jean Vavasseur-Desperriers concern primarily on the organizations (associations, parties and networks) and the political behaviors of the various member of Parliament and republican line components in France under the Third Republic.

Fields of research.

He is the author of a biography devoted to Charles Jonnart which carries out in parallel a career of senior official, of ambassador, as of the beginning of the year 1880 (in Algérie, with the the Vatican) and a political career until the end of the Twenties: deputy then senator of the Pas-de-Calais (1889 and 1893), Minister (for public works in 1893-1894; businesses outsides in 1913; blockade and areas released in 1917) and finally from president of the centrist party, the democratic Alliance (1920-1923). Jean Vavasseur-Desperriers endeavors to define his political culture while being interested in contradictions of this republican man who incarnates the ideology of preserving traditionalism, leading it to oscillate between spirit of conservation and the social progress, between the defense of the freedom and that of the authority. At beyond this singular course, Vavasseur-Desperriers updates the use of networks and structures by Jonnart in order to support its strategies (policy, diplomatic, etc).

Devoted to the republican Federation during the interval war, its thesis of State attempts to describe the transformations within this formation born of the division of the camp of the progressists at the time of the Affaire Dreyfus and which is concretized by antagonistic choices vis-a-vis the Council chaired by Pierre Waldeck-Rousseau in 1901: between those which supports it and found the democratic Alliance (October 1901) and those which line up in the opposition to this government of “republican union” around the figure of Jules Méline and which will found the republican Federation in 1903. Jean Vavasseur-Desperriers clarifies the transformation of the FR which passes from an association the notable ones to a true party arranged hierarchically with the appearance of militants by the action of his president Louis Marin (1924-1940) and evolution of its political doctrines where the characters “moderate” and “republican” are erased vis-a-vis the nationalist drift of many its leaders, FR becoming during the Thirties a platform of ideological renewal and alternative to the model of the liberal democracy (the such Corporatisme) and of republican meeting between right-hand sides, nationalist and authoritative to which the union with parties testifies to extreme right-hand side, at the time of the constitution of Face of freedom (1937-1938) for example.

Illuminant the organization (whose stakes specific to the parliamentary world and the power struggles), ideology, establishing a prosography of the leader circles of FR, the work of Vavasseur-Desperriers - by the prism of a `history by the top' - however forsakes the problems of the setting in prospect by the set of scales between departmental national structure and structures and more largely of reality of this formation in the local political life as Gilles underlines it Béguec at the time of its defense; one through divided by the whole of work sticking to the parties of the right-hand sides republican and member of Parliament under the Third Republic, except for that of Jean-Claude Delbreil on the popular Democratic party.

Recently, Jean Vavasseur-Desperriers wrote a synthesis on the lines in France for the collection “Which I know? ” with the University Presses of France which allows an overall vision of this question. By recalling the history of the right-hand sides until our days in eight chapters, it takes again the tripartition become traditional of Rene Rémond (the lines Légitimiste, Orléaniste and Bonapartiste), while discussing its relevance and its limits (the obliteration of the current legitimist, birth of the Christian Democrat, the case of the Gaullisme which it interprets differently, etc). Indeed, its reflection on the lines pushes it to question them through their positionings vis-a-vis the heritage of the Revolution of 1789, then vis-a-vis the Republic (1870) like with the values of the republican model (of which the separation of the Church and the State) and finally vis-a-vis recombining of the policy to the Release. Attentive with the changes and recombinings prevailing within its various components (in particular for the period of the inter-war period), this synthesis makes it possible to include the new approaches on the lines by the new generation of researchers whose Vavasseur-Desperriers forms part after the assessment of the knowledge acquired by the former generations in the Histoire of the right-hand sides in France that coordinated Jean-François Sirinelli with the beginning of the year four twenty ten.
