Jean Rooms
Jean Salles (1739-1798) is commercial of Bordeaux XVIIIe century, founder of the local newspaper the Port of the Moon.
Jean Salles is resulting from a family of old commercial tradition of the Bordeaux region. Well-read man, it attends the intellectual mediums but guard always a mistrust with regard to the movement of the Lumières. He founds in 1754 the newspaper of local topicality the Port of the Moon which has the appearance of a regional copy of the Mercure de France. Never subversive, the magazine, sometimes daily, sometimes weekly, brings back the events society men, policies and monk of the life of Bordeaux. In spite of the support of the intendance and ambitions of its founder, the Port of the Moon always had a limited audience. The trade of Jean Salles thrives, but the newspaper, which knows recurring financial problems, undermines the assessment of its activities. In 1778, it yields its newspaper and withdraws intellectual and political life of Bordeaux.
A fire destroys the buildings of the newspaper in 1792 and carries the totality of the files of its newspaper. Only fourteen specimens remained to us and are preserved at the Public library of Bordeaux. In fact, one especially knows it by his newspaper.
