Jean Renaudie

Jean Renaudie is an architect and town planner French born the June 8th 1925 with Meyze (High-Vienna), dead the October 13rd 1981 with Ivry-sur-Seine (the Valley-of-Marne).

Biography

Entered with the 3Ecole Nationale Sup3erieure of the fine arts in 1945, Jean Renaudie studies in the workshop of Auguste Perret then of Marcel Lods. Graduate architect DPLG in 1958, it founds with Pierre Riboulet, Gerard Thurnauer and Jean-Louis Véret (which it met in 1956) the Atelier of Montrouge. He then practices a qualified architecture of “brutalist”, because of his examination and of the simplicity of the plastic effects. The Workshop is pointed out with the departmental crib of Montrouge (Hauts-de-Seine) or with the project of the great stage of Vincennes (contest, June 1963).

1968 is the year of the rupture with the other members: in beyond differences in point of view on the events of May 68, they are in disagreement on the project of installation of the new city of the Valley-with-Reuil: Renaudie would have wished an installation of the city on cliff dominating the flat site and humaide envisaged in the beginning. It then creates its own agency with Ivry-sur-Seine. Of 1971 with 1975 and of 1976 with 1980, it takes part in the two phases of restoration of the center of Ivry, in collaboration with Renee Gailhoustet, where one of its achievements, the shopping mall Jeanne-Hatchet, brings an international repute to him. As from 1974, he works with the restoration of the center of the old man Givors (the Rhone) with the creation of the City of Stars. Between 1976 and 1981, it takes part in ZAC of Villetaneuse (Seine-Saint-Denis).

It obtains in 1978 the national Grand Prix of architecture of the Ministère of the Culture for the whole of its work.

The essence of its production carries on the social Housing and the urban development. It was one of the first opponents to the methods of production of the great whole and the first new cities of the years 1950-1960. It forever wished to make of model or systematization of architecture, with for example variety and the diversity of the apartments of the units which he built.

One of its outstanding achievements is with Givors, with the foot of the ruins of the castle. These buildings of social housing, with hillside, have a very particular architecture, seeking to the maximum to optimize the sights and the orientations of the residences.
