Jean Raymond-Laurent

Jean Raymond-Laurent , born on July 20th, 1890 with Nimes (Gard) and deceased on March 26th, 1969 with Paris, is a Christian democratic French politician, cofounder of the Democratic party popular (PDP) and appointed under the third then under the fourth Republic.

Biography.

Raymond Laurent makes his studies with the College of Amiens and militates within the founded Sillon of Marc Sangnier. He remains then in the United States and in Latin America. On its return in France, it engages in the democratic Republicans of the Seine directed by Georges Thibout and becomes the secretary in 1912 about it.

Mobilized within the infantry in 1914, it is wounded with the Wood-the-Priest. After the war, it will be one of the cofounders of the National union of the combatants (UNC). Nevertheless, it is in the political arena that it devotes the majority of its activity. Democratic member of the Republicans of the Seine, Raymond-Laurent aspires, like many men of the Christian Democrat, with the unit of the latter within a political party like with their visibility by the foundation of a parliamentary group. In this direction, he is the initiator of the creation of the French Heart (1917-1924) with Ernest Pézet and Robert Cornilleau putting in contact the democratic Republicans, the Ligue of the young Republic and the social Catholicisme (catholic Association of French youth, CFTC and the social Semaines of France) then takes share at the civic Office of action (VAT) created to the autumn 1923 for the legislative ones of 1924.

Cofounder of the popular Democratic party (PDP) in 1924, it becomes one of his strong men about it by occupying the strategic post of general secretary (1924-1940). While remaining an active member of the French Confederation of the Christian workers (CFTC), Raymond-Laurent devotes the essence of his time to the party of which it works out his doctrines at the time of the congresses of 1924 and of 1928 and sets up its internal organization and her means of propaganda.

He is elected appointed 1st district of Saint-Etienne at the time of a by-election in June 1938 following the election of Antoine Pinay with the Senate. Registered within the group of the popular democrats, Raymond-Laurent is Member of the Commission of the army as well as that of the mines and driving forces. He belongs to the delegation of deputies on a journey of information in Catalonia and will take makes and causes for the combat of the Spanish republicans against the mode of Francisco Franco, underlining the implication of the authoritarian regimes (Italy and Germany) in Spain. Lucid vis-a-vis the danger of the hitlerism, opposed to the Agreements of Munich, Raymond-Laurent will however vote the full powerss with the Maréchal Pétain on July 10th, 1940.

It initially seems to follow the mode of Vichy, giving conferences on the family and receiving the Francisque. Nevertheless, it engages in parallel in Resistance, founds with Emmanuel Mounier New Temps (1940-1941) and takes an important place within the clandestine press in Lyon.

In the Release, it takes part in the foundation of the popular Republican movement (MRP) in 1944. He will be appointed the English Channel under the colors of this party, of 1945 to 1958. The advent of Ve République and a new Constitution marks the end of its political career.
