Jean Poquelin or Jean Pocquelin , religious French of the 17th century, dead the February 28th 1704 with Adze-the-Berenger, first cousin of Molière.

Biography

Origin

Jean Pocquelin had, says one, be merchant before entering cléricature. He was the last of the children of Louis Pocquelin and Marie Lempereur. He is the first cousin of Molière.

His/her brother, in the act where he resigned his canonicat to him, says it priest of the diocese of Rouen; he, is given like diocese of Paris in the former act of collation of the cure of Adze-the-Béranger. Jean Pocquelin signs only Bellisle in the first years of his ministry. It is only later that it returns to its patronymic name. One finds also the signature: Pocquelin de Bellisle .

It was provided with the cure of Adze-the-Béranger, by death of Mr. Antoine d' Avoust, priest, who were also diocese of Paris, the February 22nd 1679. Louis of the Alder of Montenard de Tressan was then bishop of Mans.

Priest of Adze-the-Béranger

He in person did not take possession, and gave for this purpose a procuration, gone back to Louviers (?), in Barthélemy Nouard. This excellent priest, who was all his life vicar of the parish, and which still survived the new priest, took possession on his behalf the March 23rd. The first act written and signed by Jean Pocquelin is following year, May 4th 1680, more than one year after the installation. Since then, the priest of Adze-the-Béranger observed the residence. He was cleaned during 25 years. Five times, the Senior of the Chapter or his delegate visited the parish and all things were always found “ in the suitable decency ”. Mr. Pocquelin accepted itself sometimes commission to replace the Senior of the Chapter in the visit of the cures subjected to his jurisdiction. It is, for the Abbé Angot, a proof of its merit, confidence of its superiors and consideration which he enjoyed near his fellow-members. He was entirely foreign with the project of his brother for the resignation of the canonicat of Saint-Julien, and he left the various benefit which one wanted to yield to him to go to others, without continuing as he could have done it by imitating many examples, and can be with chance of success.

He was to succeed Nicolas Poquelin, his brother, in a canonicat of the Mans, but the too late resignation of dying was without effect, and Jean Poquelin had to remain in his cure of Adze-the-Berenger.

He occupied himself with zeal of the spiritual good of his parish, gave of the order in the temporal administration, and decorated his church. One remade of his time “ joinery and the sculptures ” several furnace bridges. The baptismal font is due to its generosity. Installed in the new church of Adze-the-Béranger they do not strip the beauty, and will remain of it like an authentic and invaluable memory careful ministry of this Pasteur. This font represents a marble tank of the country posed on a foot of similar matter, of a correct and simple drawing

Armorial bearings

The armorial bearings of the priest, which are those of the family, are reproduced twice symmetrically beside the double inscription. They such as are well described the author of the genealogical history of the Family of Molière , but they have here the advantage of giving us a true drawing and not of imagination as that which is at the head of the printed work: five oaks on a ground .

Vaults

In addition to the cure of Adze-the-Béranger, Jean Pocquelin enjoyed two small vaults; one of Notre-Dame in the church of Grez; the other known as of Bourelle in the parish church of Évron. It was equipped with the latter in court of Rome, and gave to a procuration dated from Mans to Me Barthelemy Nouard, his vicar, who took possession on his behalf the November 15th 1674.

Death

Finally “ the vingt-huitiesme day of febvrier 1704, worthy and discrete Master Jean Pocquelin, priest, priest of known as Assé, is deceased, whose body esté buried in the church of the known as place by worthy and discrete Master Rene Fouqué, priest and senior of Evron. (Signed) Nouard . ”

It was a good priest. He did not interfere to give himself a successor by a resignation in extremis, and was replaced in his cure by Michel Buat, one of the fellow-members of Saint-Michel of the Cloister.
