Biography

He was initially member of the French Communist party as of 18 years. With the Release, he is national secretary of the student Communists, then leaves major the contest of aggregation of history in 1947. He leaves PCF after the Insurrection of Budapest, contrary to his brother Claude Poperen. He takes part then in the group Tribune of Communism then to creation in 1960 of the PSU of which he becomes one of the leaders until in 1963. In dissension with the orientation adopted with the congress of 1967, Jean Poperen constitutes with others the Union of the groups and clubs socialist (UGCS). After an article in Combat on this initiative, it is excluded from the PSU the December 21st 1967. In April 1968, the UGCS joined the FGDS, of which it integrates the political office. The following year, the UGCS is recipient of the recasting of the Socialist party (PS) to the Congrès of Issy-les-Moulineaux, where it animates a tendency of left, Rassembler on the left.

Poperen was Député of the the Rhone of 1973 with 1988, mayor of Meyzieu of 1977 to its death, number 2 of the PS of 1981 with 1987. Of 1988 with 1992, he becomes Minister for the relations with the Parliament of the first and second governments of Michel Rocard.

The Rassembler tendency on the left (followed later by New World 92) approached sometimes but never did not amalgamate with others, in particular the Gauche Socialist. Contrary to the latter, it supported the Guerre of the Gulf. To its death, its current was led by Marie-Therese Mutin, which left the PS shortly after the Congrès of Brest, and Alain Vidalies. This last animated the sensitivity “poperenist” in the tendency Nouveau World then the current Rassembler the left near to Laurent Fabius.
