Jean Pin , born in 1510 in Normandy, is a Sculpteur and Architecte French.
Called the “Phidias French” or “Corrège of the sculpture”, Jean Goujon is one of the major figures of the French Renaissance.
Biography
The beginning of its life early is known little, it may be that it travelled in
Italy. Its first known works go back to
1540 when it carried out the low-reliefs of the
castle of Écouen for the family of Montmorency, the doors of Saint-Maclou and the tomb of Louis de Brézé with
Rouen. Arrived at
Paris towards
1544, it collaborated with the architect
Pierre Lescot in the church Saint-Germain-the Auxerrois of which it carried out the low-reliefs of jubé. He became “sculptor of the king” Henri II in
1547. Its more famous works are the sculptural decorations carried out in collaboration with
Pierre Lescot for the Western prolongation of the Louvre in the years
1550. It took part with this last in the restoration of the Louvre between
1549 and
1562. One also owes him of engravings for the translation of
Vitruve by
Jean Martin in
1547. It manufactured also invaluable medals for
Catherine de Médicis.
Representative of the Mannerism French, the figures of Pin are oval, sensual and fluid. Its draped reveal a knowledge of the Greek sculpture. Spread in the whole of France by the engravings carried out by artists of the school of Fontainebleau, the purity and the grace of its model influenced decorative arts. Its reputation knew, at the end of the 16th century, a light eclipse with the profit of tendencies maniérées, before being again appreciated by the Baroque and the Classicisme French.
Its most known works are:
- nymphs of the fountain of the Nymphs (become Fountain of Innocent the ) 1547 with 1549
- the Caryatids (1550 - 1) for the platform of the musicians in Louvre
- the Allegory S on the frontage of the Louvre (1549 - 55) of the square Court of Louvre
- the four Seasons carried out for the hotel of Jacques de Ligeris, today to the Museum Carnavalet with Paris.
One generally allots to him engravings of the French version of the
Songe of Poliphile of
Francesco Colonna (
1546), according to engravings of the original edition (perhaps due to the studio of
Andrea Mantegna).
Its workshop is responsible for Diane pressed on a stag (~1549) carried out for Diane of Poitiers to the Château of Anet.
One is unaware of the date of death of Pin. The historians lose his trace after 1565. It is claimed that he was assassinated at the time of the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre
